As the gathering is talking a thin wisp of a boy wlks past them. His clothes are worn and his hair a bit ruffled. "Rex I'm hungry..." The boy looks down at the little girl holding his hand. She is wearing hand me downs but her smile could light up all of Tarant. He knows that his little sister has not eaten at all today and with no coins left from his paper route it looks like she may go hungry again tonight. "Don't worry Nina, I will find something for you to eat. You just hide in this corner here, be very quite and Rex will be back with something good to eat!" The hungry boy smiles down at his young sister knowing that he is her hero and he can't let her down. Not knowing what to do he then smells the delisous pie's in the air. He also notices that the shop keep is busy speaking to a group of adventurers. He prowls quitely behind the men as quickly grabs at the first pie he sees! Pie firmly in hand he is heading back to his little sister when he hears "Stop Theif!"

I grabbed the little boy. I looked into his eyes, and saw the pleading look there. I followed his gaze, and saw a scrawny, filthy little girl.

    I put him down.

"My mistake. So sorry. Here, take another pie with my apology."

I turned back to the adventurers.

"Sorry, what did you want again? 2 or 3 pies?"

These fellows seemed nice enough. After all, they'd helped me catch the little thief.

"What are you folks? Adventurers? What brings you to the Culinary Art Exhibit?"

Adventurers hey? Maybe they could help me...maybe I could help them...I can't stand being at this pie, or pie fair really, for much longer.

Though the pie stand operator cover had been working well, it was time to move on. I had to get out of here as soon as possible. Better to move on to areas where my skills were more suited...I'd always found the night and the dark good and reliable friends over the years...perhaps it was time to become reacquainted with them...though, how did I know these fellows weren't working with them?

"Ah, a fellow adventurer! How wonderful to meet one! Might I ask your name? I know the name of your companion there is Feldon...any more to his name?"

While Andrew chatted with the pie vendor, I turned to look for my old companion. He was struggling with his Locomunator. It looked as though it had sprung a gasket. He'd probably be heading to Appleby's for repairs.
"Hail, fellow!" I called to him. "We shall make our plans and meet you at the tinkerer's abode."
I returned my attention to Andrew and the Halfling. They had made quite a team in capturing the young thief.
The boy kept a wary eye on our assemblage, seeming ready to bolt or fight at any moment. Behind him cowered a slip of a girl, hanging on to his
    shirttail for security.
"Yes, Halfling, tell us your story. I am Feldon Kane, a wandering adventurer and sheep-hurter...uh, herder. I see you have met Andrew of Tulla, and my old friend over there is a little busy right now, but introductions will be made all in good time. Please tell us of yourself...and then I would have a few stern words with this lad."

Dazedly tinkering with the shoelace harpsichord regulator, which had been hideously discombobulated by the percussive harmonics of the impact, I suddenly remembered the two who had with drunken magnamity cushioned my blow.

I turned from my vehicle, realising with embarassment that I had been churlishly ignorant of them for some time, as if my mind were somewhere else - perhaps some miles away across the city attending a family religious ceremony. Shamefaced, I anchored my attention on the familiar, though certainly not what one might call reassuring, visage of my old aquaintance.

"Eh?" I said elequantly, then "Wassit?" with equal articulation. A flash of frustration was followed closely by one of comprehension: more than just my Locomunator's regulator had been upset in the crash.

As usual with those of my intellect, accurate recognition of the problem enabled me to readily formulate the solution. I rumaged through my pouch of herbals and soon produced the mandrake root I had hoped to find, as well as my trusty mixing pestle. Taking great care to achieve the precise quantity and rhythm, I used them to beat a tattoo on my head.

"Ahhh, much better. So, Feldon - who are your friends and why are they looking at me so strangely?"

The ways of technology have always been a bit of a mystery to me, but I had seen the Sheriff perform his "Ritual of the Root" before, and so was not quite as surprised as the others. Thank the Gods he hadn't continued it to its usual conclusion.
"Er...yes, well, we've just met, really. We were just about to make our introductions. Let's discover if our plans mesh. "

Honesty. Unusual. These fellows seemed to be my sort...

"Greetings, I am Luden Cole. You could best describe me as...a night-time person, if you get my meaning. If you need something done, I can do it, for a price of course. I select my customers with great care and precision. My jobs have sent me all over this fair land. I have found technology to be more reliable than magick in my line of work over the years. What magick colleges have you specialised in Andrew? And what is your area of specialty Feldon Kane?"

"Greetings to you, Luden. You seem somehow familiar. Are you related to the Smith Brothers, by any chance? Never mind. As to my skills: I strive to meld the Magicks of my forefathers with the swordskill of my Nana, Candy Kane. She was quite a woman. Sometimes I herd sheep. I like sheep.
I prefer to have advanced knowledge of battle, so that I might use my Magicks to more easily wield my Great Sword. People have said that I seem to grow in their eyes when performing this Magick, like a pussycat puffing itself up when it's angry. Many are the foes who have fallen beneath my blade screaming, 'Feldon is a pussy!'"

Many Halflings were skilled with more than just cooking utensils. A good footpad would make our quest many times easier and less expensive. I bit into one of the pies.
I hoped Luden was a better thief than a pie-maker.

"Ah, a magician are you? Well, I have studied several technological disciplines, mainly the smithy one though. And a faster person with a knife or hand you'd be hard pressed to find."

To emphasise my point, I had my favourite knife in hand before he could blink - a 12 inch serrated blade with a nice little hook on the end. Not only did it tear up the skin as it went in, it took all sorts of things out as well...

Slipping the knife back where it came from, I asked "Where are you bound Andrew? What is your quest?"

"Oh Rex I was so scared when those men grabed you! Are you ok?" Rex bent down to talk to his little sister while dusting himself off and handing her a piece of pie to eat. She looked almost on the verge of tears. "You should not have worried Nina, I told you I can take care of myself."

Rex tried to sound brave for his little sister but to be honest he was scared to death and quite greatful that those men did not turn him over to the constables. He watched and listened to them as his sister happily ate her pie while humming quitely to herself.

    "Rex?"
    "Yes Nina?"

"I'm glad they let you go I would have been very scared without you."

"I am glad they let me go too Nina." He looked into her hopeful eyes. "But if they had not I would have thrashed the lot of them!" he jumped up and made a bunch of comical jesters that made the little girl laugh at how silly he was being.

    "Rex?"
    "Yes Nina?"

"Do you think the nice men could help us find our Aunt Ga-Ga?"

Rex frowned slightly as he pondered this question.

"No Nina I don't think so, they look much to important to bother with us. Besides Aunt Gaylin lives very far away, I am sure they would not have the time. Now hurry up and finish eating it's almost dark and we have to find a place to hide before those rotten Half-Orc's come out."

Rex stood up, dusted himself off again and then offered the little girl his hand. She smiled and took his hand while munching on what was left of the pie.

    "Rex?"
    "Yes Nina?"

    "I love you."
"I love you to Nina, and don't you worry we'll find aunt Gaylin soon I promise"

The little girl smiled up at her brother.

"I know we will Rex, you always make things right." Little Nina smiled and skipped along as the two walked off.

My shoulders drooped at the sound of the dreaded Q-word, "A quest, eh?" I said, trying to muster some enthusiasm, "It's not by any chance, the quest for the comfiest sofa, is it?"

Then, finally recalling my manners, "Oh, do forgive me, please. People call me Sheriff Fatman - it's ... ahhh ... a long story - and, as both old Woolly-breaches and my modus motivi will testify, I'm a practitioner of readily applied technology, sometimes called a PRAT."

Pausing to survey the assemblage to get their measure, I added "Luden looks as though he may have the makings of a PRAT too, but I know Feldon is otherwise inclined and if ... Andrew, is it? ... isn't a mage, I'll re-populate my spinosity chamber. Well, I've got nothing against you lot - not everyone can be expected to master the complexities of technology, after all."

Having done my duty, I turned back to the heap that was once my Locomunator. One wheel was still slowly rotating in a wobbly path, almost bringing a tear to my eye. Something would have to be done, but such repairs are costly, so perhaps a lucrative little quest wouldn't be so bad after all. I just hoped this one didn't involve horseraddish.

Squaring my shoulders, I turned back to the mismatched little group behind me, "So. Who's in charge out of you lot, and where do we go from here?"

"Greetings Sheriff Fatman. As you might have heard, I am known as Luden Cole. Apparently this fellow is in charge of his and Feldon's little group. He's been a bit quite for the past few minutes though."

I noticed the shonky machine behind him.

"What is wrong with your machine there? It looks like it's going to fall apart any second."

Trying to hold back my tears in the face of Luden's lack of tact, I mumbled "Why don't you bend over and take a look at it - you look like a PRAT."

Luden and the Sheriff were speaking in words far too abstract for my mutton-addled brain to comprehend. Also, I was a little drunk, and that pie wasn't helping things either. I think it was Rancidberry.
I watched as the boy and his tiny charge went on their way. Who were they? How would they survive? Where would they go? Were there sheep there?
Perhaps we would see them again.
"Andrew, why don't we see if there is a way to help the Sheriff with his ma-sheen? And you can tell the others of the Quest you had in mind."

Well I am Andrew of Tulla.I have studied many colleges of magic and mastered the famous force college. My quest or should I say our quest is to find a rear scroll, the Scroll of Forum Resurrection. As you probably noticed the roleplaying forum is dying but since I started the quest it began to live again. But that life is still small and fragile so we need to find that scroll and to do that we'll need lots of companions.
Sheriff I would ask you to be silent about such matters as technology being more complex then magic.Well Sheriff I'd be happy if you join our quest but you'll have to leave your lo-ko-mu-tive behind because it'll greatly disrupt my magic abilities and Feldon's too.Mr.Cole I would like to ask you to join our quest also. We'd really need a man of your "profesion".We'll find a cook somewhere else  .
