See, there's more to Sergio than meets the eye. He's not just a typical blue-collar worker. What generalizations did I make in that story? Sergio is just one man; he's violent because that's his nature, the fact that he's Sicilian just makes a violent and aggressive nature all the more likely. Joey Giannini was just an average Mafioso, he wasn't exceptionally tough and violent. And just because Deanne was a slut doesn't mean I'm insinuating that all Irish women are sluts, nor that all Jewish men are fat, bald lawyers who use money to get women to cheat on their husbands.

Not exactly. He wasn't involved with the mafia at all, it was just his union. There is nothing he could do about that. He saved Joey because he was a fellow paisan and was about to get his ass kicked by a bunch of low-life blacks (as Sergio would see it).

That's all it's supposed to be. Nothing deep, just a story about violence and ethnic interactions and tensions in Bergen County. If you were from the area, you would probably appreciate it alot more. See, to you, the fact that Danny Goldman lives in Tenafly, Sergio and Deanne live in Hasbrouck Heights, and Sergio works at the docks in Elizabeth probably means little or nothing. But to a North Jerseyan, it's something we can identify with. And the whole Sicilian man/Irish woman cross is very common in that area, or at least more common than any other Sicilian mix. Usually they stay with their own women.

Completely understandable. I wasn't offended in any way, just so you know. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. The story will become more complex as it continues towards the finish, with more characterization and interaction.
I'm going to finish the story, and I will post the rest, just so everyone knows what happens at the end.

The story stirkes me as an immitation of the fantasy world embodied by Casino, Goodfellas, The godfather, Max Payne, various police tele-dramas, etc, etc, etc. While the story might be dramatic and violent, it also glorifies the immature impulses of the unfullfilled adolescent sexualtiy, and craving for violent externaliation of these frustrations. This fantasy world goes hand in hand with vague ethnic stereotypes, Irish as well as Italian, and the glorification of justifiable violence, through the narrator's excusing tone towards the "anti-hero." This justification is often (in fact, almost always) embodied by adolescent themes like honor, duty, and are sometimes simply written off as things the character was simply so compelled by that he couldn't help himself because he (never she) was simply so distraught, tortured, or beside themselves with passion that they just ound themselves at a point where they simply couldnt do anything else. All of these aspects, and character flaws are simply evidence of the sel-righteous nature of adolescent sexual frustration, that makes it extremely easy, and attractive for the immature audience to right off the gratuitous violence as justifiable extensions of the characters sexualtiy, and lead to fantasys of asserted masculinity which s the ultimate purpose of the story, both for the author and the audience.

I just logged on and read the story again, and I was sort of inspired to write my opinion on the whole genre of New York Gore Noir, that some of us seem so fascinated by.

The point is that you are reading way, way too much into the story and the genre in general. Why don't you just enjoy it (or hate it) for what it is, rather than think about all the underlying reasons for the creation of the story and the reader enjoyment thereof.

 

I can't enjoy it. I'm sexually fulfilled.
