Guys, I have a bit of a conundrum.

My monitor will not, for some strange reason, display anything lower than 1024 by 768 resolution. Needless to say, I can't play Arcanum anymore.

So, what I need is to either find a way to get those lower-end resolutions back (I had from 640 by 480 to 1280 by 1024), get Arcanum to run in a window, or buy a new monitor. I'm strapped for cash at the moment, so if I do need to get a new monitor I have to wait about two more weeks...and I want to play Arcanum very badly. Remember when rroyo released his mod? That's when I found out my monitor shit the bed.

    ...Yeah, pretty much.

Though, come to think of it, I do remember having Arcanum run in 1024 by 768.

I'm going to try and force it to start in that resolution.

Well, you could get your graphics card to stretch the image before sending it to your monitor.

Hey, if you don't know how to do it, then I must have "remembered" incorrectly (read; subconscious memory fabrication).
Proof of this is that I don't know how to do the thing Xz said.

You should be able to do it from the GPU Settings manager, which was installed along with your graphics driver. If you don't have an integrated graphics card that is.

You can probably locate the program by right clicking on your desktop > properties, and go to the Settings tab and click advanced.

I realize you and I have entirely different systems, but my library computer has no trouble running Arcanum at 1024 x 768. I just double-checked and couldn't see any quality difference from the normal 800 x 600.

You did what? Arcanum changes the resolution to 800 x 600 when you start it, it also changes it back when you exit.

Well, all this means is that I have to get a new monitor, or I have to get something that makes Arcanum run in a window.

What's really weird is that I can run my console emulators in a resolution below 1024 by 768 no problem, but as soon as I try to manually switch below that by changing the display settings, I get this whole,
LOWER?! What the fuck! So, that's my whole issue. My monitor is dyslexic.

Oh, and to make matters worse, the message is displayed in 640 by 480.

Go to 'Advanced' and to the 'Monitor'-tab try changing the frequency.

Just don't set it too low. Anything below 100 Hz makes my eyes red after a couple of hours.

You really need to get an LCD monitor mathboy, and if you have one already, you need laser-corrective eye-surgery.

I thought about buying one, but then I figured there were lots of better things to do with my money, like having it collect dust in my wallet.

Also, those monitors are bad because I can't change the resolution the way I want to without things starting to look bad.

I have a Dell 2007FP. Its native resolution is 1600x1200. It uses filtering to upsample any lower resolution, and you can choose the sharpness of the filter on a scale of 100 in the menu. Its quality is good enough.

If you buy a 1600x1200 monitor, each Arcanum pixel will use four monitor pixels, Now you're not going to tell me that'll look any worse than it does on a CRT, are you?

Now really that was a question, as I've never seen that.. :p

Actually, it's a misconception that 800x600 looks better with simple point sampling on 1600x1200. CRTs use native antialiasing, which is more similar to the filters used by the human eye, whereas a simple point sampling produces blocky images.

Try it for yourself: resize something in an image editor. In Irfanview, there is a HUGE difference between Resize and e.g. Resample/Lanczos.

Oh well, you could always get your monitor to display black borders around the image. :)
