I would like to see the ugly gray question marks go away. Either remove the box if no avatar is selected, or replace the question mark with a standard image that jibes with the color scheme.

What about a face with a question mark in it?

I'm ok with seeing The Riddler every time someone without their own avatar posts. His face is generally associated with question marks.

I'm okay with NOT seeing the Riddler. Ever.

I'm in favor of a return to the old ways of simply not having anything unless something is selected. I don't need to see a big gray box to know that somebody didn't select an avatar.

As with the other 90% of the times he posts, I agree with Japes here. However, it's possible the forum is setup such that there *has* to be some kind of picture in that space.

Yep, that's exactly what I don't need to see every time I visit this place.

What about a silhouette of a face, such as how Facebook and YouTube users with no avatars have it?

I'm also in with Japes on this.
If the system allows no avatar, then just have nothing there like the old days.
If an avatar is enforced, that just do a blank silhouette like on1ondevelopment said.
If, gods forbid, you must do a Riddle, please forego Jim Carrey and stick with Frank Gorshin.

And why not Neil' pity-he-never-really-played-the-Riddler' Patrick Harris?

I've never thought about it before, but you area correct.
I think NPH would be an outstanding Riddler.

Ideally though, I think it would be best to go back to the old system - dig out the old set of standard avatars and have customs awarded on merit and chosen by community - it was a nice tradition. I suppose there might be an issue with giving people back their old customs though.

What about using the standard portraits from Arcanum? For example, if one chooses "Male" as their gender, then the picture would be the standard one for Solomon Doome, or Human Male 1.

    This.

It might just be me, but for those of us who had to (for lack of a better term) work for our avatars, it doesn't seem fair to just hand them out willy-nilly. It's not that hard to hit 1000 posts and demonstrate a personality, but it's an accomplishment. There were folks that didn't make it.

    I'm proud of my avatar.
    Keep up the tradition.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to sort my monocle collection.

I would have gone with "Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go yell at kids to stay off my front lawn."
