I tried the ambusing the bandits in the factory thing to get in but it has no effect on how the front gate guard reacts to me. I can't seem to enter into any dialoge with Appleby, he just keeps repeating that he's busy with a new idea. And finally my persuasion rank isn't good enough (It's like rank three expert, i dunno what you call it, its my first time playing the game), my only option is to lv up three more skill points to get 15 charisma and the next rank of persuasion (or reload my only old file where I carry off more than half way back).

    Any advice?

Does this mean that you didn't get the quest in the first place, but you forced it?

    Are you patched?

One way to get into the Bates mansion is to sneak in via the tunnel from the graveyard. When you get in, you put on one of the costumes.

Oh, and always try to keep some recent saves to go back to.

Oh I didn't know you got it from someone, I just stole the key, went to the factory and skipped to midnight and they poped up.

From whom do I get the quest to whack them?

Yes, I applied 1.0.7.4 as soon as soon as the game was installed.

    Thanks for the info!

I do (I learned the habit well enough from Fallout) I just saved too often :(

Edit: Luckly I found a save (besides the one where im lv 10) right before I killed the factory bandits.

Edit 2: I checked gamesfaqs the take a peek at their walkthroughs and found who give the quest but I recieve no dialoge from him giving it to me.

Hmmm... Have you already been to the Schuylers? I mean, are you trying to get into Bates's mansion just because you fancy a big house to break into? You have to talk to the guard (I think it says "captain of the guard", I don't really remember, not to the half-ogre) in front of Bates's mansion and he'll give you the quest.

Yeah I've been to the schuylers, I talked to them and Magnus got my to kill them, I used the kley off one and get the memo, I thought bates has another quest (for the black mountain mines i think).

Thats the guard im stuck at, the only dialoge paths i get from him is saying im from the press and im an admirer, after that I cant only say good bye to him.

Can I just steal the clothes and mausoleum key off Appleby and get in, or does that way only work if you accept his quest?

Oh btw, how do I put keys on my keyring?

    What worked out?
And as regards those replies you get from the guard, remember the old saying, "Honesty is the best policy."

I ment didn't work out, I snuck into the mansion and talked to Bates, he attacked me.

The only way I got passed it was to whack some guards, chop down his bedroom door and take his journal.

I didn't want to do that, I'd rather have talked to bates and have a chance to get Chukka.

Ok, I found out whats wrong, waaaaay back when I killed the Schuylers and took the memo but didn't read it and junked it.

I guess my only option is to load the old file back up and retread everything...

    Thanks for the help though.

Oh, you're welcome. Now that you mention it, it happened to me the second time I played Arcanum.
    Notes can be annoying.

While I've got a thread started I'll some noobish questions:

How do I put keys on my keyring?

I'm able to train in lock picking, but no lockpicking icon appears for me to hotkey under the key symbol of utility option.

IN the same vein, how do I use character traits like lockpicking, Virgil is trained in but I can't get him to try and use the skill of locked items.

The keyring is like a magnet. Just pack it in your inventory and they keys will be magically attracted to it. ^_^.

You won't get an icon, but you can see the skill if you have a set of lockpicks. The nicest thing to do is to put the lockpicks in the hotkey space and when you want to use them, you press on the little gears that represent the lockpicks.

If you have two sets of lockpicks, leave one of them in his inventory.

I hope that works, because I'm not really a lockpicking expert. :p

From general stores, mainly. I don't remember if junk dealers have them, too.

Generally (ahem!) you'll first see one in the general store in Tarant upon your arrival, though you might find one in the general stores in Dernholm and/or Black Root if you visit those locations before Tarant, and if you take a few naps in Shrouded Hills and the shopkeeper restocks, he might have a key ring for sale.

It's kind of frivolous--once you have one, that's all you need. They probably should've just put one on Preston Radcliffe's corpse at the crash site. :)

And deprive one happy store clerk in all of Arcanum of the pleasure of getting 2 extra coins? Bah, humbug! :p

On the segue of key rings--shouldn't more keys incur a greater noise penalty to prowling? :)

You're right. Try opening the door at 6 a.m. without your parents hearing. Also, carrying around a bunch of more than 20 keys is quite... encumbering.
