Most likely, it was a cleanliness issue that got rolled into religion. This is most likely the case with the 'don't eat shellfish'n'shit like it' stance that was in the Bible, but is now ignored by most Christian groups. Hell, I think they do that with many things that just don't fit with what they want to be their 'religion.'

If you'd ever read the New Testament, you'd realize that gentiles are not bound to follow the law of Moses. Since 'most Christian groups' are not Jewish, most Christians get to eat bacon.

 

just as a matter of fact and a gravedig I can not resist - both Judaism and islam derive the circumcision of infants from the bond of Abraham as described in the Old Testament.
the differences are more significant: modern Judaism only requires it for male newborns if no medical objections arise. within the concept of "righteous among the peoples" it is accepted to be circumcised anytime, even post mortem prior to the burial, if stated so in the last will.
modern islam (oxymoron, I know) requires circumcision of males and females (look up FGM for the latter) and considers it an active sin if the parents decide not to do so. although islamic lawyers tend to claim that those barbaric rites are not anchored in their scripture, little attempts are made in prevention of said rites.
and on topic - while you can get away with just a stern warning for denial of the Holocaust, the attempt to work against islam for human rights like freedom of speech (Danish, anyone?), gender and sexuality(death by hanging or stoning), belief (death by suicide bombing) will net you public humiliation, becoming a branded "xenophobe" and in last stages a knife between the ribs from our culturally enriched immigrants in our oh so free and democratic western Europe.
