Shit, your recurve is illegal?

I guess that means my max 70-pound compound bow -probably- isn't legal either. That's a shame, since I've been wandering around trying to shoot shit with my wonky depth perception in public places whenever I get the chance. Not that it's set to 70 pounds mind you, bit fucking uncomfortable pulling that back with one hand after a while and I have a nasty feeling it may skin my forearm one day.

Who cares about the angsty teens, if the bitterness on this forum turns them into sour, homicidal people I'll be over the moon.

Charonte, you have a 70-pounder? NICE! I went compound for a while, but there's something to the feel of a recurve that's far more satisfying for me.

That, and watching the new guys who think they're god's gift. Here I am, pulling 45 pounds and scoring some very nice ends, looking all cute and innocent. 'So, what do you want to try?' says Pat, the bloke in charge. 'Aw, I'll try what the little lady's trying,' says the latest fool.

'BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!' goes Caity, watching them struggle and whine as they fight in vain to pull the string so much as a bloody inch.

Ever tried pulling an English longbow?

It gives you an understanding of how Agincourt was won.

I know what you mean, it's sort of tacky once you get past the max energy point and there's no more effort required to hold it there. I might get a reflex or recurve as soon as I start hitting stuff again. It was fun shooting through (small) trees for a while, though.

And struggling with 45 pounds?! What sort of weakling fools do they breed up that way? Funny to watch atleast.

One interesting thing that I've learnt is that it doesn't matter how buff you are, if you're not used to the particular movements used for a bow, it's very difficult to pull anything above 15 pounds... Or at least, that's the impression I get from some of the guys who come along.

I've never tried pulling an English Longbow, considering that they're about two feet taller than I am...

I've never had -any- formal training at archery and was still able to pull back the compound when we first got it (albeit not easily) and I'm not buff by any stretch of the word. I dunno, 45lb ~= 20 kilo which just doesn't sound like much; then again I've never shot a reflex.

DE, my cousin convinced me we should build a longbow when I was a kid, so after switching off the local farmers electric fence we broke a branch off of the willow tree down near the creek, threw some (small) firecrackers at the cows and grabbed some sticks to use as arrows.
I'm not sure if it was just our craftsmanship or not, but that thing was a bitch to draw and tended to shoot arrows sideways.

Ah yes, willow bows. We made those too. Juniper would probably have made a sturdier weapon but seeing as they never grow to tall trees around here the way they do in the south, but become gnarled and twisted shrubs too crooked to make anything useful of, we made do with what we had. Willow and birch.

The irritating part about them was that they tended to snap in half after firing five or so arrows.

The cool part about it is that the community center in my home village still has holes in the walls.

I grew up with this invention called gunpowder, you may have heard of it.

You have to have a licence to own a gun. Bows are unlicenced and FUN. And don't require a year-long arguement with bureaucracy.

That is part of the reason I got so pissy when they outlawed crossbows a couple of years ago. There's a shop over in Wynyard that still sells them without needing a license IIRC though.

I'm just assuming it was willow from what I remember, it sure as hell didn't break after 5 shots although we never really did get it to max draw.

Wynyard, eh? I might saunter over there and have a look. I'd love to own a crossbow.

This was years and years ago though, I haven't been there recently and I reckon they would have stopped selling them by now. Shame, though...

On the topic of weaponry nobody actually needs, I'm hoping you guys can back up your claims by supporting the legalization of fully automatic weaponry, as well.

Why stop at fully automatic weaponry when one could lobby for the right to own interstellar death rays?

Actually, Grak, I fully support the restriction of fully automatic weapons. Y'see, I live in a country where gun use and ownership is highly regulated FOR A REASON. America's had lots of psychos with guns killing lots of innocents and done nothing. Here, it only took one psycho to change things, and I believe we're better for it.

(Please don't let me go any further down that path, for I am a highly OPINIONATED Xiao.)

Are you, by any chance, referring to Martin Bryant? Jarinor also used him as one of his arguments for gun control, I believe, although this was probably the best piece he ever wrote on the issue:

Even though my inner liberal sometimes thinks that people should have the right to own whatever the hell they want, those are some solid arguments.

I think every man, woman and child should have an interstellar death ray cannon.

But seriously, are we gonna have the gun control debate again?

    Not again!
Let's see, both sides think the other side is dumb.
Both sides have numerous stats to prove their point.
Both sides think that the other’s stats are skewed or false.
Both sides fail to convincingly win the argument.

That should about cover what's going to happen.

In the end the ones with guns will win. Not because of argument, but because they can shoot the other unarmed side.
