A birthday can be happy even if it starts with a bad morning, assuming it is followed by a great afternoon and evening. Hence, wishing someone a happy birthday may very well be a veiled way of wishing him, among other things, a bad morning.

I ate three pączki (usually translated as donuts but not exactly the same). Didn't know anyone outside of Poland actually heard about fat thursday. This is the first time I even see it written in English. How unusual it looks and sounds.

It was actually a Polish post-doc in my research group that brought it food for it and mentioned it, most people try and bring in cakes and stuff to share out when they have an excuse. Probably most people in other countries haven't heard of it!
