Well, I finally did it - got a full 8 hours last night. And this morning I feel... tired. So what the hell is up with that?

Maybe I should train myself to only require a few hours per night, Batman style. Good morning.

 

Chances are you slept too long.

Sleep divides into few different stages repeating over and over again in cycles, with each cycle lasting 1,5 hours on average. You end up tired if you wake up mid-cycle and rested if you wake up after a number of full cycles.

That being said, you'd feel more rested after 5 x 1,5 = 7,5 hours of sleep than the 8 hour option.

It's not actually as simple as that, because successive cycles get shorter, so by the 8th hour you're not really having the full cycle at all, but kind of flitting in and out of REM sleep. Also, the base length of a cycle varies between people, so 7.5 hours might be good for you, but someone else would find that 7 hours is a better fit for their 84-minute cycle. Anyway, I'm sure you don't need me to tell you all this. Good morning.
