Well, that is pretty crappy. I just quit, like, just now. Here's what happened: I decided to try something new (failing miserably at both a mage and a gun guy) so I decided to make something along the lines of an inventor, to make minions to do the fighting. Well, at the begining, the only on doing ANY fighting is Virgil, and I think we all know how much he sucks. Well, I fivirously put points into Int and Mechanical Somethingorother and hope I'll ever get the mechanical arachnoid. After about 3 days of failed attempts (real days) I finally got spike trap crazy and liter the ground around Witless and his peons with over sixty (thats right, over 60 traps) and force them to run into at least 5. Finally works and I'm allowed out of Shady Hills (whew) Well, here comes the good part. Being the RPG gamer I am, I say, "Ah, the world map! Random encounters and experience come hand in hand! Hurah!" and set out with my gnome inventor (weilding a flintlock and his suit he came with, and his clockwork glasses he made) and Virgil (in his chainmail, axe of strength, chain gloves and boots) to level up. About thirty minutes into I ran into one of the two encounters that the idiot programs must have slipped in on accident: The pack of 4 uber-demon-god wolves. This has happened before so I say, "Right, I'm running!" and throw a stun grenade at them, leave Virgil to attempt what no doubt is impossible, and see if I can make it back to the world map before they catch us. Again, impossible. For the next hour, I try at least 13 different tactics, some of which are humiliating to the point of stunning myself. So, my inventor is stuck in a random encounter, that I have no save to back track to, the is impossible to win. Why am I rambling? Makes me feel big. I also want to know whether being that gnomish inventor was doomed from the begining? Oh, and why is the game so freaking impossible?
Well, what you could do to get yourself out of that rut is useing the Character Editor to make your guy a god then crush the wolves and then hack it back.
Failing as a mage and as a gunslinger? How did you manage pray tell? Going as a mage, take the "only child" background, take spells like harm and agility of fire- and you're set. Being a gunslinger, spend one point on throwing and take a boomerang to help you get out of the Crash Site, and you will get (or make) your first revolver in the village (or steal a hunting rifle from the blacksmith). As for your gnomish inventor, it was indeed a strange idea. The way you sounded you didn't even have Sogg in your party. He would easily dispatch those wolves. And you could leave Shrouded Hills with something better then a flintlock- a revolver from Doc Roberts or a hunting rifle from the blacksmith. Going through the game without any direct damage spell or weapon only becomes possible when you have decently trained followers. My advice if you want to stand and watch your followers fighting- instead of tricky devices boost up charisma and learn therapeutics to make your tech and neutral followers more efficient. Take Jayna's place as a healer as well to be somewhat useful Oh by the way, a new idea for a weird way to build your character- grenadier. Learn to make grenades, max throwing and don't fight in a crowd The tricky thing is that as far as I know you don't get experience for damage done with grenades, so levelling up will be a bit of a challenge, but so is your gnome trapmaker because traps also don't give you any EXP
It sounds to me that your problem is that "lack of saves" you mentioned. Use named saves regularly, & the F7 whenever it just might come in handy. To make the bridge battle easier, drop rusty daggers or railroad spikes where the witless one & his crew will each pick one up. They do so much less dammage that way. For gunslingers, ust the Raised by Monks, Mad Doctor, or Miracle Operation backgrounds & don't plan on having a gun at the crash site, or take Bandit. Put one point into PE & two in firearms. THe 50 bullets you start with & the few in the ghost cave will get you out of the crash site. For a mage, your first spell should be Harm. Get your MA to 20 - 30 as early as posible by studying more spells or being an Elf or selling your soul. One zot, one dead wolf. Your inventor needs a way to kill things before he builds an arachnid army, & a flintlock ain't it. The boomerang is a good idea. You don't need much ST to throw. And don't feel bad about the wolf pack. I am experienced with the game & I still can't take a pair of Golden Bears, a Were Rat, or a pack of Timber Wolves at level 12. That's what save points are about.
Too late, too late. Well, those are some tips I haven't done yet, but, the mighty fist of modding has already caught me. I downloaded a mod that supposivley makes the game easier, adds new guns, new followers, and the such. So far, I'm doing fine with my inventor. Thanks for the help
