Okay, this isn't about science versus anything, just those who study/teach/work with it.

Who among you do so and what are your fields/specialties? I'm agog.

What does agog stand for? Australian Genomics and Clinical Outcomes of High Grade Glioma?

I'm pretty sure it's an old english word describing a state of acute anticipation.

Well, I'm still agog here, people.

Studying chemistry, currently specialising more in biochemistry and synthetic organic chemistry. My masters project is probing the substrate specificity of an enzyme on the biosynthetic pathway to a natural product which has antibiotic activity against several pan-resistant bacteria; with the hopes of improving on that natural product to either improve it's antibiotic activity, it's bioavailability or just to make it more resistant to the human metabolism. So I have to make the substrates through organic chemistry, and isolate the enzyme by sticking the plasmid that codes for it into bacteria and upregulating it, then run an assay with that enzyme and the substrate in question.

That's my work in a nutshell, and if I do manage to get onto a PhD I'll be doing the same thing.

I work with gene silencing in cancer cell lines to earn my master's in biotechnology.

The essence of the work is employing RNA interference to inhibit the synthesis of a protein participating in the growth and spread of certain cancers.

I study different branches of physics. I'm trying desperately to understand as much of the field as I can, and hope to eventually get a job in nuclear engineering, as well as try to get the hang of quantum mechanics.

Jojo and Muro seem to be working on incredible degrees and have awesome jobs.

I'm on my last semester as a geology undergraduate. Been working a little bit as a field geotechnician lately and will probably continue to do so this year.

For me, it's probably not as riveting as it sounds. Most days I don't actually do a chemical reaction, I'll be trying to get something I've made pure and solvent free which isn't exactly exciting. Plus it's slow going and it never seems like you're achieving a great deal.

    That's what she said.

I see what you're saying. I think part of why I have so much fun with anything I do that's science related is because I might make a mistake when trying something new. I'd guess when you had first started doing this you felt that purifying something in a lab was pretty exciting, though I can understand how the novelty would wear off, if that's the case.

The most exciting thing I did recently was trying to tell a stoner how quantum tunneling works.

I sell plumbing supplies at Lowes. So, like, pipes and stuff. Just started college though, going for a degree in graphic design, so I will soon be one of the intellectual elite like yourselves.

A side note on a couple trends I have noticed since starting school:
    1) Yoga pants have apparently soared in popularity, and God bless the school bookstore for selling them to all the babes on campus.
    2) Maybe it's not a recent trend, maybe I've been sheltered from it by my time in the army, but it seems the number of girls who just slop the makeup on their faces to disgusting levels has also soared.

I work in the semiconductor industry testing memory that is used in mobile devices such as cellular phones. I'm a bit disenchanted with it as of late.
