Very sorry if this is the wrong place to put this. I looked around I couldn't find anywhere else better suited----

    Hey folks,

Arcanum has been one of my favorite games for years, and I really enjoy the amount of story that went into it's making. The different cities, the 'culture' if you want to call it that, the whole landscape seems to have.

But I always get a little peevish when I go to Tarant. Whenever I'm trying to blow open doors or murder small people, the Tarantian Gaurd always come running after me with swords... This is supposed to be the forerunner in the technological race, with the most sophistcated military and society in all of Arcanum. Still, the people of Tarant walk about without even shoes on their feet, and the police run straight twards me with pointy shards of metal in hand... Not so much sophisticated.

I was looking over the meager selections of mods and hacks available for the game and came up with nothing even remotely pertaining to my concern.

If there's a skilled modder out there who wants to help me out, or even tell me how to go about fixing this myself, this is what I want to do:

-All gaurds are equiped with Worn Boots
-All gaurds have up to Expert in Firearms
-All Low level gaurds (Patroling ones in black uniforms) equiped with a High Velocity Pistol or Fine Revolver + 100 bullets
-All High level gaurds (In chainmail near the sewer system opening) equiped with Repeating Rifles + 175 bullets

-All Low level citizens (Not nobles) equiped with
    Worn Shoes
-All High level citizens (Nobles) equiped with Shoes

Thank you very much for the read thus far, and any help you can provide me with!

If you wanted to discuss whether or not should guards and other inhabitants of major cities in arcanum use guns rather than meele weapons, that's pretty much the right place.

Then again if you want to talk about how exactly you can make them use guns and have more full equipement, you should have posted in the modding forum.

The simplest way of giving different NPCs stuff is editing the invensource.mes file, found in one of the .dat files. Read some modding tutorial if that name dosen't ring any bells. There must be a reason other then laziness for the original developement team not putting as much stuff in the guards' inventory.

Also, it would seem that guns are not popular enough to be standard issue among common city guards, with bows pretty much equally suited for the job, yet cheaper and well rooted in tradition. Tarant might be a city of technology but it's not a cutting-edge kind of approach. Otherwise you'd have people taking automatons for a walk, guards running around in mechanized platemail or electro-armour and your average paperboy wielding a tesla rod.

Oh, and by all means, stop picking on the small people, and refrain from devastation acts. At least when the guards are watching.

General issue equipment is prescripted by the government employing the individuals to which the items are issued to. IE, the Tarant Military/Police hands out the arms/uniforms/whatever- The gaurds themselves do not choose their own.

I think Tarant, having utilized firearms effectively against the Knight laden armies of the south, would be sure to extend this new technology to the fair men patroling their streets.

Really? Do you have any ideas as to what this might be?

By popular i had in mind not how much guards like the idea of shooting someone instead of bashing his barins out with a club, rather that not many characters use firearms in the game, with meele weapons still being most popular. Even tough the tarantian army used firearms it dosen't mean that an average guardsman should be armed in a similar fashion. They don't wear platemail and don't fight Dragon Knights, instead their role is to keep peace and persuade the customers at Madame Lil's to pay for services kindly provided by Belle. They don't need rifles or revolvers for that, not to mention that Tarant isn't probably rich enough to provide all guards with firearms and propper training for no apparent reason. Also you might have noticed the orc labour uprising at the Bates' factory. In case there is a need, a better armed force is mobilized. Mind you, not quite trained to use their arms.

Hell knows, I'm no developer, it might be many things. Game engine quirks resulting in minor instability when a lot of characters put on 512 pieces of clothing at a time instead od 96, RAM space, being taken up by suff that dosen't really make much difference... Such equipement might simply induce needless complexity, making beta tests a pain and adding stuff to a beta tested product it not a good idea.

Look at this form another perspective: you don't need these boots, gloves and other bells and whistles like that, you can find most of it in a trash can, what you can't is useless anyway. Besides, you're not supposed to kill the guards, and by the time you can take on them, you don't need anything that an average grunt could possibly own. While it dosen't change much, this certianly would consume system resources without actually adding to the game.

Actually, he sounds kind of like a prevert. He's still just thinking about the fetish. A pervert actually does it.

Yeah, but he's standing so close to the line that a sneeze would knock him over it.

True. But since he is still on this side of the line, let's give him the benefit of the doubt and be good enough to turn our heads when we sneeze, shall we?

I think the air turbulence created by us turning to ensure our sneezes are aimed away from him will still be sufficient to push him over the line.

Seems like he's a self-aware spambot. Or, he was pre-scripted to respond after a certain amount of time, quoting random bits of peoples' posts.

Ye gods... I read that first post just after putting down Night Watch (Terry Pratchett)...

If someone IS crazy enough to do this (and being here, you can't deny that SOMEONE here would consider it at least) then you need to add Commander Vimes, Corporal Carrot, Nobby Nobbs (now THERE'S an encounter my character would want to avoid at all costs) et al...

Oh, and we mustn't forget Lord Vetinari. He could have some VERY interesting quests...

Now I want to teach myself modding and do an Arcanum meets Ankh-Morpork mod...

For those of us who can't spare the time to read the book right now, could you fill us in on the synopsis of "Night Watch"?

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! (In case someone gives a rat's ass)

Duke Vimes (I'll never get used to that) attempted to arrest a man who's been murdering Watchmen, finally catches up with him on top of the Library at Unseen University, and a storm that's been pushing background magic across half the Discworld arrives...

Long story short, Vimes finds himself in his own past, with said homocidal maniac, and tries to make sure that the past stays on the correct path. There are lots of interesting bits, a young Lord Vetinari (definately worth it), some bloody clever thinking and the deaths of seven good men.

Read it as soon as you can.
