Japanese RPG are overrated. RPGs based on Nordic mythology or any other European mythology tend to be better then the Japanese ones (often, that is. Not always). IMO, one of the best "RPG-worlds" ever created are "Drakar och demoner". Only problem with that one is that I don't think there is a translation of it and the majority of this forum can't read Swedish. Anyway...

I don't like the fighting system in the FF-series, therefore I don't play it. I'm not that good at FPS so I usually play a lot of RTS and other types of strategy games* or RPGs like Morrowind.

*Personal favorites: Heros of might and magic III/V and Rome TW.

Heros of might and magic III/V - Very real time games.

And I think that at least a lot of this forum are actually able to read Swedish nowadays.

    Ok.
I think maybe your idea of an RPG game is a little different to that of "Gaming preferences".
Maybe Final Fantasy should be classed as Action/Adventure and not RPG.
Maybe it should have a class of its own.
Maybe your one hundred percent right.
All i know is, Final Fantasy was the inspiration the gaming industry needed to set off the whole RPG genre.
Without FF you wouldn't have games like Breath Of Fire or Grandia.
Bottom line is, when most think RPG they think Final Fantasy.
Sure most of the people here including myself maybe straight away think of Arcanum but you can not deny. Final Fantasy is RPG. And without it, many, many others would not exist today. Ok of course games like Boulders Gate, Arcanum and Diablo would still be here, but i wouldn't in a milloin years try and compare them games with Final Fantasy. Why? Because although FF and them are both RPG games, they are vastly different in a variety of ways.
So i think the argument here is not a question of how good is Final Fantasy, but more of was the title of RPG quite apt enough in coordination to the game.
And why did i compare FF to StreetFighter? I guess because i was trying to show that although in all games you are playing the role of a character, most do not contain the depth of Final Fantasy.
And i guess the reason Final Fantasy is called an RPG is not only because of the storyline, maybe it was to do with the fact that there were no levels. Only quests. Maybe it was the fighting system. Or maybe it was just because thats how it was pitched in advertising and its succumbed to that genre. Also, who are you to say what the RPG Genre is? Or me or anyone else for that matter.

You're right, they are different. For instance: Baldur's Gate, Arcanum and Diablo were fun to play.

The Legend of Zelda did more for the RPG genre than the whole FF series.

Is it like the old NWN but with better graphics? I liked the old one. Ok, it wasn't perfect and it took some time to finish and a few things weren't that good, but it was so damn classic. No fuzzy things, just plain RPG. I've seen pics from NWN2 and it looks quite good. Too bad it probably cost around 500 kronor (more than 50 dollar, I think).

The OC is admittedly quite linear, though it's nice to see a story-driven RPG after having played Oblivion. At least there appears to be some use of conversational skills, and all the new subraces and classes are nice. And there's no talk about it, the NPC's are great.

And yeah, I got my copy for 499 SEK, which equals a whopping 69.6089 USD. It's costly to stay on top.

We'll see, maybe I'll buy it, maybe I won't. There are, of course, alternative ways...
