Possible spoilers. I have read in a few different places that if you recruit Gar in Tarant by purchasing him for 3000c after revealing to HT that you know Gar's secret (the option ending in, " . . . the so called Orc") you would get -50 alignment points

but after multiple reloads and different dialogue choices I cannot get it to happen, even when using the alternate method without purchasing Gar(first, " . . . Gar the HUMAN," and then, " . . . takes a dim view of slavery," followed by the threat to sell the story to newspapers)

my Dark Elf follower female elf wizard demands an orc slave with the accompanying negative alignment repercussions. She has a CH9 and Persuasion of 2/5, the minimum I think to deduce Gar's origins and initiate the option to recruit him

As far as I can remember no negative alignment is gained from freeing Gar (the interpretation in the game is that you're freeing him, not swapping his slave shackles from one person to another so to speak). In fact after freeing him, if I recall correctly he'll leave you if you do too many evil deeds around him. My advice would be to get a charisma of 20 (maybe not possible if you've chosen the Dark Elf Follower background - but you may possibly just be role-playing as a Dark Elf) and then you can treat him however you want and he won't leave. Also don't worry about spoilers, with a game this old those concerns are long gone.

that's too bad about the alignment thing, despite being so old there's alot of misinformation floating around for this game, but then again, with it being so old theres zero motivation by all but a few to correct the mistakes

speaking of the games age it isnt necessarily true about the spoilers thing. With the semirecent release on GOG there are alot of first time players like myself. Arcanum was always a game that I remember seeing on the shelves and wanting to play back in 02, 03 but never got around to it, not to mention there were alot of good games many of us were playing in the early 2000s to distract us: HALO1, Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Counterstrike and its mods etc etc

I sure am glad I picked it up just this past month though. Arcanum is easily in my all-time top five games

on that note, time to alt-tab back to it :D, thanks for the response
