Hi all- My Problem: I have a Dell Dimension 8100 series, 1.4gig pentium processor and a measely 128mb of ram. Obviously, I need to upgrade. Hoping to get up to 512mb ram (in anticipation of the upcoming EQ2 ). I figured it wouldn't be a problem because ram is so cheap these days. I've seen 128 megs going for as low as 20 dollars. My Question: Whenever I do a search on my system on any of a number of ram finders (zdnet, kingston tech, crucial.com) it always comes up with ram that is as expensive as $178 for just 256mb. What gives? Why do I have to pay so much more for my ram? Do I have any other options or do I just have to suck it up and shell out the cash?
There are many types of RAM, and yours is evidently more expensive, which generally means it is nicer, or you could just be looking in the wrong places. It is also cheaper to buy multiple smaller sticks of ram, if you have the space. I like mwave (http://www.mwave.com), and ordered most of the stuff in my computer from there.
Older RAM is also more expensive. If you're using a type of RAM that hasn't been made for a while, or is not used much, and there is therefore only a small market for it, then you'll pay through the nose¹ for it. However, it's unlikely that this is too much of a problem, since you sound like you've got a fairly modern system. Also, have you accounted for shipping fares in the price? ¹ Metaphorically speaking of course. I recommend that you do not literally pay through your nose, as it may cause lasting damage, and no end of embarrassment.
Hi all- Thanks for the responses. A mod over at the NWN page was nice enough to send me a link straight to dell where I can buy some reasonably priced ram.
That RAM is more expensive probably because it's DDR RAM, and it also comes in a 256 meg stick. The bigger the stick, the more expensive. It's also better, but it's more expensive, so hey...
