Someone explain this one to me. I assumed your max in a stat would be based on your race/sex/background. At the very least, your race and sex. I created a female half elf with 8 in every stat, except 7 strength, 9 dexterity, and 9 beauty. This is what they start with. I chose no background so none of her stats would be influenced in any way. I made the assumption since my dex and beauty were higher than my other stats, they would be able to go over 20. Yes, and No. Beauty stopped at 20. I could go no higher. Fair enough, says I, as you wouldn't gain anything else for more beauty points past 20 anyway. Dexterity went up to 21. All my other stats of 8 went up to a max of, 20. So far, this all makes sense to me. All my 8 stats maxed at 20, dex was a 9, it went to 21, and beauty was 9 , but no point for it to be 21. That left my strength, which was a base 7, yet I was allowed to increase strength all the way up to 20. I assumed since strength started at 7, I would max at 19 and not be allowed to go higher. So what gives? Are you able to bring every stat you have no matter what your race/sex up to 20? What determines how high a stat can go? Do you just take any stat that is 8 or higher and add 12 to it to determine the max you can get with it? Any stat 7 or below you just assume will reach 20? Anyone have answers?
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer. I always thought the same thing as you, ie. racial max = base stat +12. If someone does know the answer, I'd very much like to hear it. And another thing, why don't the god's blessings allow you to surpass racial maxes? You'd think that the blessing of a god would allow you to become more than you are normally capable of being. Oh well, just one of those things, I guess...
So far as I know, you can raise every stat to 20. It seems not to be important that you started with a stat below 8. What I didn't know was that you can raise a stat (in your case dex) to 21. X
Oh, definately, Xanamanorac. My latest guy is a half-ogre, and his Strength max is 24. Base Strength = 12, +12 =24 I didn't know that the minimum max is 20, though. I always figured that if you started out with a disadvantage, your racial max would be lower. Like if your base strength was 5 (halfling), then the highest strength you could get would be 17 (5 + 12).
Ok. So maybe they did that on purpose just to let people get any stat up to 20 (to get the 20 bonuses), yet starting with a higher stat is beneficial in the sense you don't have to spend as many CP to max it. As for stats being able to go over 20, I guess it depends on how high a given stat is over 8 based on race, sex and background? I mean you know Half-Ogres can get well over 20 strength since they start with like 12 base. Anyone with a Half-Ogre with the ran away from circus background build up their strength until you couldn't add more to it? If so, what was the max?
Max is still 24 in that case. The bonuses you get through background choice don't apply to racial max. Which makes sense, logically. You can just reach your racial max faster than normal. Although, I've read that a background that decreases your stat beyond base level will limit your max. Kind of unfair, huh?
Very. You would think they would have made backgrounds affect/limit your max in a given stat. It would have added a little challenge to the game. Imagine taking something like sickly and then having to function with 6 less max strength. I think they should have taken your stats after your background was chosen, and said ok, you can gain 12 points in any of your stats, that is IT! So if you started with a background that brought your strength do to 1, you could have 13 max str. Background that gave you 14 starting willpower, you could have 26! Btw, how come there are no good Int. boosting backgrounds for tech people without decreasing dex, perception or strength (all important to techies imho) ? You got like a million backgrounds that affect strength, dex and combat related skills and really nothing that favors the tech oriented characters.
