Do any of you guys(or girls) know where I can find a good quarterstaff? I have looked around but have never really found one. Guess I could make myself one, but I'd rather buy one I knew was good quality than have to make multiple ones before I figured how to make one right.

Ah, as far as I'm aware, a quarterstaff is simply a regular old staff that is held in one hand at the halfway point and halfway between that hand and one of the ends. So, if the staff was one metre, one hand would be at 50 cms, and the other hand at 25 cms (100 cms=1 m for you Imperial users who do not understand such things).

So why exactly is it called a quarterstaff?

If you had really long hands and held it at the 66cmmark, with the other hand at 33 cm, is it a onethird-staff?

Oh, so this isn't a totally silly post, here's a link to some place that sells staves.

Martial arts supply shops. Often called Bo Staves. The Korean style with taperes ends is nice & quick.

The staff should be within 6" either way from the user's hight. (That's 16 cm for you clonial types that have forgoten imperial units.) So if the staff was a mere 39" you are a midget. As one of the standard moves is a spin, your hold is not in ballance. Positive you are not thinking of a riot baton?

Sure, I guess it could be any staff, but it needs to be of a quality that it won't shatter when it hits something. And it is supposed to be 6-9 feet I think.

Quoth the English Master-at-Arms George Silver,

But as it does vary with height, it wouldn't have been uncommon for a youngster to have a staff of about six feet.

Hey, deadshit¹, ever think that I might be using a length of one metre as an example to get my point across? I said nothing about the standard staff being one metre long. Given that a riot baton is also one handed, no, I'm not thinking of one. I find it suspicious that you are, though :D.

¹See how easy it is to use retard?

Yeah, yeah! It is easy to use! I've wondered about incorporating "deadshit" into my spoken vocabulary. I'm just worried about some of the looks I'd get.

"Deadshit? What ta fuck is that, man?" Stupid fucken Americans.

You have been to different riots than I have sir. Back in the '60s, before those side handled batons became all the rage, many PDs here in the states had 36" - 42" riot batons, which were often used two handed as well as one handed with a lexan shield. (There is an SCA legend that the Berkley PD hired an SCA knight or several to teach stick & shield work to the boys in blue.)

what i fail to understand is, why do you want a staff??? a broom would serve the same purpose. if you dont want a broom, get a lightsaber.

You, my always-illuminating friend, need desperately to stop watching anime and kung phooey flicks like the Matrix, and to learn a thing or two about British martial arts and culture. Or you could just shut up, that would work for me as well.

Gee, that's funny. I had a retired Brit Major as a stick fighting instructor. In the USMC.

The brits use longer & heavier staves than the orientals. The Korean style is tapered at the ends, making it faster. I don't know about European styles.

A really good peasant with a quaterstaff could take on a mounted knight, unhorse, shuck, & shell him in less time than it took me to type this. The avarage peasant would, of course, die like a dog.

It is also my understanding that kung fu doesn't come from China, so your chances of finding a Chinese kung fu master would be slim, at best.

Kung Fu is Chinese to the uber extremes of Chinese-osity, Jar. It's more Chinese than my 100% Chinese friend Siu Loong. Who, btw, was named after the more famous Li Siu Loong, aka Bruce Lee, a... CHINESE KUNG FU MASTARE.

EDIT- your dictionary is retarded to the uber extremes of retardation, backstabber. It's more retarded than my friend Retard. Karate derived from Kung Fu, not the other way around.

my dictionary did NOT state that kung-fu derived from karate. it simply said that kung-fu is similar to karate.

Karate is similiar to Kung Fu. The way the dictionary worded it seemed to imply that Kung Fu came out of Karate, because it infers that Kung Fu is a "Chinese Martial Art" that becomes more Kung Fu-ey the more Karate-like it gets.
