Problem with Space Bar switch from combat

I'm returning to Arcanum after a few years. Love this game.
But, this time, I can't use the space bar to get into or out of combat mode.

I did before and I've installed and uninstalled 4 times now.

Anyone have any ideas? :-?

 

spacebar - switch between real time and turn-based combat
R - combat mode on/off

I think that Space Bar works on the "press any key" screen.

 

Certainly not mine. I'm way more clever and assholish than that stupid attempt at week old joke trolling.

Not much, mind you.
