many of you have posted brilliant ideas at to what would make Arc 2 better, but what should the plot be? it couldn't be the whole Void-problem agian... it would have to be the same world, but say... 5-40 years later? and what (Major) changes would've occured?

Note: this string is bound to include spoilers, and it is here posted, so do not be angered if you see a spoiler that you did not expect.

The way I see it, this is a question of sequel or prequel.

An interesting option would be to place the game back in the Age of Legends. This leaves us with many options - for one thing, there are many different factions to join and fight for. The elven council, Vendigroth as well as the cause of all the villains the council banished (Kerghan, Bane of Kree, Gorgoth etc). This also gives us a vast availability of new features (stronger spells, Vendigroth technology etc)

Other than that, a game placed in the future also seems like a good idea. What if technology arose to become the ultimate power in Arcanum, eventually annihilating magick? And then, once again, magick is rediscovered by Vendigroth scientists, who find a way to power machines of war with it. What if they decide to use said power to take on the whole world, finally making truth of Vendigroths old dream of putting the whole world under the same banner*? Such ambitions can't come without resistance however, so there's room for a great deal of resisting factions.

The possibilites from there are quite endless. You could be a test subject, infused with magick too value it's effiency. You could be a Vendigroth soldier, accidently afflicted with magick due to your useage of said magitech machines. You could be a Vendigroth soldier fighting for your nation, dabbling heavily into tech. You could be one of the first mages in Arcanum in centuries, forming a resistance faction amongst with other wizards. As I said, the possibilities are aplenty.

*taking some artistic freedom there. :D

I think it should be something akin to Arcanum... like this: after Kerghan was destroyed, and then everyone had left the Void, the Bane of Kree had rebuilt Kree, and was living in it.. and what had...

[note] this is a thought that I lost half-way through... I'll update this when I get home... thanks. [/note]

Hmm...those are both great ideas. Not sure wich I liked more.... Originally I thought it would be best if Arcanum2 took place durring the age of legends, however I like the idea of Magitech. However I dont see Vendigroth as being a warring nation, I CAN see them inventing something like magitech though. If Arc2 took place in the future I dont think magic should be completely wiped out. I imagine it would be limited to only a few places though. On the one hand, if Arcanum2 takes place in the future then it might not flow with the various outcomes of your actions in the first.
Also, why not add a new continent? As an elf you can lie to Mirth about being from another continent so there must be more.. this could be an opening for more races, Trolls, Goblins, and perhaps a few rarer ones on the Arcanum continent.
If however it takes place in the age of legends, say a few hundred years before Kerghan and Arronax, then anything is possible. We really never find out a whole lot about the Age of Legends. There could be Dragons, a few Giants, large Orcish hordes, ect....

Sleek, your poll has nothing to do with anything. I personally like Langolier's idea about the plot, I think it's the best yet. Oh, and mine never came back to me, that's why I didn't update that.

listen you, the polls intention was not relevancy, it was just there to be ridiculous.

as for the plot suggestion, i was just posing the argument that perhaps the ideas presented in arcanum's plot were perhaps more important than the setting. whether or not you think my mention of them was pointless is your opinion, just like the rest of the ideas presented in the 1 billion identical "plot" threads, its not a fact, or even an argument; its an opinion. use personal messages the next time you want to argue with me about something like this ok? THIS is spam.

there could be in the future, and vendigroth and the thecnology could be the ruling country. And there is an elf rebel group that you could join or an vendigroth solider as was said before!! and the main plot could be as the original arcanum: the main plot went 2 different ways, one as an rebel and one as vendigri\oth solider etc.

They should make an expansion that you install and all the games that you beat in the first arcanum you continue as the same exact person you were in the first arcanum (skills, money, items, weapons, Ect) Then they have you come back to arcanum and you are famous and then go from there it would be a hell of allot more easy and cheap than coming up with a whole new game.

I love the whole tech vs magick thing, however I'm not sure that it has to be the main force behind the story. I think a colonial war works nicely.. something like world war one. We have trench warfare, deployed machineguns, mustardgas, airplanes, submarines, emerging tanks, and large steel battleships. Perhaps the Unified Kingdom and Cumbria are about to go to war over ownership of the new colonies, while at the same time the colonies themselves are considering breaking off from the main land of Arcanum completely. At the same time maybe a guerilla war is begining in the Dark Fens against the Bedokaan. Or maybe an Orc warlord has begun uniting the orcish tribes into one large horde? Perhaps the Industrial council is beggining to pressure the Elves of Quintarra about the deforestation of the Glimmering Forest. Against the ever increasing explosion and ill-use of technology the Dwarves and Elves are being further alienated from the Humans and Gnomes. Maybe the Elves really are starting to blame the Dwarves for all this? Or maybe they are starting to talk about an alliance agianst the Industrial Council? Magick has been outlawed in Tarant and Ashbury, and now is extremely limitted in Caladon. Small groups of mages and nature enthusiasts are gathering to together to try and take down the industrial council and purge technology from the land of Arcanum forever! Tensions keep rising and threaten to explode into one horrendous conflict, the likes of wich Arcanum has never seen.
Thrust into all this is YOU, will you side with the Industrial Council and fight in the name of progress? Will you side with various resistance factions and attempt to bring down the Industrial Council and destroy the accursed technology wich plagues the land? Or will you try and find some balance? Find some way to end this war before it has even started?
I suppose that this idea IS Magick Vs Technology afterall though huh?
The year is 1925, bootlegers work to supply the masses with that ever precious drink, alchohol. Tommygun toting gangs clash with one another and police in city streets. Union workers try to brake the bourgasie's hold on power whilst fighting to make a socialist dream?
I think the early 20th century works fine for this. It isnt quite the Victorian age anymore, but its not far removed. We have newfangled cars and planes, noble steeds and robed mages.
Good idea for a basic plot?

There is a steampunk genre it can fit into, Arcanum is fantasty steampunk and your setting is jazz steampunk ie 1920s.

Well, I still like it. I think it moves JUST far enough ahead. Or I say take it back to age of legends. Vendigroth was obviously experiencing its own Victorian age when it was destroyed, so why not go back to that time?

I disagree with Chris, that sounds fairly lame to me... I've got an idea, Why not have it that you start out in the twenties, but you gain the option to go back to the age of legends (chasing some one who's trying to change the past per say). If you didn't go back nothing bad would happen, but if you did then you would fight your way through the past, and then get to return to the twenties... I dunno what the plot would be, but that sounds good to me...

if Arcanum is fallout two centuries before, why not make it a prequel to fallout?

Arcanum is not Fallout two centuries before. I've personally never played Fallout, but I do very well know that it is placed in a post-apocalyptic* California. Arcanum is set in a completely different world.

Were did you get that from?

*How come that you're never able to talk about Fallout without using the word post-apocalyptic?

I know it's a different continent/realm, but the historic evolution is the same, 'cept for magic.

And now for my concrete idea on the plot:
    15 years later
You're a civilian in Tarant. Tarant gets attacked by a fleet of ships and half-orcs(remember breeding experiments) and you're forced to flee. As it turns out, there is a technology genius who's evil and wants monopoly on technology. Thus, his first target is tarant. Later, though, you hear rumours about a small village being leveled. Everyone thinks it's the techie's work, but in one of your travels you meet a survivor who managed to escape the village and he tells you it's the work of a single wizard. A little more discovery and you find out that a wizard couple were working on the lost college of magic, trying to find out more about it and revive it. The pair eventualy became masters of the school, but they split. The man becomes over-powered and the power consumes him(his mom loved him too little, his father too much :D ) and he decides to take over the world. The woman goes into solitude, not wanting to challenge her husband who she still cares for.
An unlikely alliance between the techie and the mage spells doom for all of Arcanum... untill you show up.
