    Just curious: perhaps you're 'inneffective'.

What in the world are you levelling up on, anyway?

I tried the mines at level 15 and found it difficult because I ran out of healing stuff for Magnus and myself(high tech). Virgil had no problems keeping Sogg going though. I restarted the game using a lower tech charachter, only creating healing salves so I can give them to Magnus. Run pure melee now. Got up to level 30,expert melee and dodge, by wearing chainmail, virgil has dragonskin armour, sogg has studded leather and magnus has oiled chainmail I believe. We all have swords except for Magnus traded in the sword for the mechanical gaunlets when we found them. I have had no problems mowing down baddies. The cementary in ashbury is sweet for leveling, respawning zombies are cool. went up 10 levels there alone. The mines at this level are easy if you make use of the trap scrolls.

Just one question. Is virgil better suited to carry some sort of staff instead of a sword. He is ok at melee but with Sogg, Mutt and Magnus I guess he is outclassed? What is a good staff for him to have also?

    Virgil: Level 15 -16?
The first chance you get, get him an arcane staff.
That's where he hits his stride.

Only problem with the arcane staff is that it does primarily fatigue damage, while everyone else in the group is doing 'real' damage. Which doesn't work that great as a combination, even though occasional opponents will fall unconscious before dying. And undeads don't even take fatigue damage in the first place. I mostly let Virgil use an arcane staff because it's the only arcane item I've gotten hold of, and I don't really need everyone to be a good fighter either.

Arcane staffs are mostly useful for their fatigue reserves. If you want a staff to crack heads with, use the Staff of Xoranth.

Just to clarify on this: The Arcane Staff has some amount of 'Mana' which is effectively extra fatigue points with which to cast spells. This Mana even recharges itself slowly over time; waiting for 1 hour completely recharges it. The Mage's Staff also has this nifty feature, albeit with slightly less mana. As you can imagine, this makes it the ideal weapon for a character who relies primarily on Magick. However, for reasons I can only speculate, this little feature is not mentioned anywhere in the item's description. The only way to discover it is by experimentation (or reading about it here).

Amen to that. Now that's something the Infinity games did nicely. Each and every ítem you find comes with a neat description, even mundane and non-magical stuff. It might just be an ordinary +1 Longsword or whatever, the mere fact that it may have a unique story about it really does something towards creating a compelling atmosphere.
