It's obvious, but it's better just for man's sanity to think he has some purpose. That's why religions were created.

So because we have a limited life span, everything we do is pointless? I don't think so.

If you build a hospital, then you die, was it pointless? No.

The concept of Heaven, Hell, and most everything else written in the Old Testement was the Jew's version of the Egyptian Book of the Dead. Within its texts there's the whole afterlife thing, where your soul is weighted and you either go to Heaven of Hell. It even has a St. Peter figure!
It really shouldn't be suprising as they lived in Egypt for who knows how long, and its just natural that you'd pick up the beliefs of your homeland.

    Comparisons to the Bible

The Christian god of today might very well have originated from one of the primal Egyptian gods, Amen, who evolved with Egypt until he was considered the great creator god. Its believed the Greek god Zues originated from him as well; and worship of Amen only stopped with the advent of Christainity in Egypt....

And a myth about Flood was surely taken from the similar Sumerian legend. It's not strange, because, according to Bible, Abraham came from Ur (which was strongest Sumerian city). Probably it's coming from the fact that Semite tribes initially lived in northern and middle Mesopotamia.
