Petition: To lease the Arcanum IP to Obsidian Entertainment

My obvious ironic invective aside, I am slimly hoping that the such a petition might remind people at Activision that they are sitting on a good IP and may make them review their policy of doing jack-shit with it (though, and rightfully so, the likelihood of them licensing it to Obsidian is in my mind 0%, as Philes pointed out initially).

Well, it hit 200 signatures. I guess that means they're sending the petition, though going off the petition page I'm not too sure what's happening. Maybe I'm too wired into crowdfunding campaigns with their flashy and explicit updates.

 

*sigh* I'm wishing them good luck, but is probably going to be like asking EA to give the license of Ultima back to LB...........never going to happen.

 

Does Obsidian even want the IP though?

 

Why Obsidian? Do they can make Skyrim with Trains and call it Arcanum, like they did with that Post-Apocalypse Skyrim series they have going? I'd sooner say hand it to those "* Enhanced Edition" fuckers that've produced hit-or-miss improved variants of most of my favorite classic games.

 

I think Obsidian could be a good job of a new 3D Arcanum game, Fallout: New Vegas is easily the best 3D Fallout game (and I'd say rivals the classic isometric ones) so they have something similar in their library already. In comparison to FO3, FO4 and Skyrim by Bethesda, FO:NV had a much richer, impactful and well written story while maintaining the great setting, which is exactly what you'd also want for an Arcanum sequel. Plus, if a deal was worked out with Obsidian, there would at least be some potential for Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky to work on it again.

As to why Obsidian specifically, the petition states that the company "has an interest in developing a new game in the Arcanum universe", though I can't find any source for this supposed interest. Most likely I'd imagine, someone was asked during an AMA or something would you like to develop a new Arcanum game and they responded along the lines of, "Sure, why not?"

An Enhanced Edition would also be a great idea however. From the video I posted yesterday, Arcanum has sold a significant amount of copies since the demise of Troika, so I think a remastering would be viable and profitable.

In any case, it never hurts to drum up some talk about an IP, even if the goal of getting Obsidian to work on it is entirely out of reach.
