hey chaps, i'm in the later stage of the game (at the panarii temple), and whenever i initiate dialogue with the head priest alexander, my character's intelligence permanently drops to 1 for some inconceivable reason. is this a common problem, and if so is there any way to circumvent this? if not, what can be done? my arcanum is patched and all that. any help would be appreciated. :cyclops:
That is the weirdest glitch I have ever seen. What sort of equipment are you wearing? What was your intelligence before talking to Alexander? Are you yusing a custom background? Also, have you been hacking? Seriously, I've never seen that sort of thing happen before. It might be some sort of curse (friggin shot in the dark). Of course, no curse in the game should ever lower your intelligence more than one or two points. I've never seen stuff in the archives of this website showing the same problem. You're the first, maybe only, person to have this happen. As sad as it sounds, you may need to restart your game and see if it happens again. Either that, or if you don't mind getting an evil alignment shift, try killing Alexander. If I recall, Hadrian and the other guy in the back (don't remember his name), are the only ones who tell you anytrhing worth a damn. Just be wary, should you try this route, Alexander is a level 40 NPC, and he can really whup on you if you don't have a plan.
heh. my character's intelligence is normally 9. i'm not using a custom background, nor have i been hacking. my character is a thief-type wearing a smoking jacket and wielding a balanced sword, and is not wearing any magical items. i've received stat bonuses from most of the altars in the game, but i don't think that should be a problem? i already tried killing alexander, but that sent hadrian & the other guy after me as well. this bug isn't really an obstacle to finishing the game, but it ruins the feeling of the panarii temple section and i would like to avoid it. to get around talking to alexander, i also tried sneaking into the temple basement from the passage in caladon's sewers. i was able to get in, talk to hadrian, and clear up the nasrudin/finger of mannox stuff. but, as far as i can tell, the sewer passage is one-way - so i can get into the temple fine, but i have no way of getting out! the sad thing is, i'm level 50 and only a couple character points short of learning the teleport spell, which would allow me to avoid all this hideousness. ugh. is there a character editor i could use to talk to alexander and, afterwards, edit my character back to normal? i'm wary of character editors though, since hacking usually causes more bugs...
He is patched, that's why it's so weird. Hey, maybe you could re-install the patch? If not, just re-install Arcanum, then re-patch it (make sure you've copied your saves so you can put them back into your save folder). There's an arcanum character editor on this website, from the Dimensions of Arcanum website. Version 1.8 is the most recent. What you need to watch out for is to not do too much to your character (or your party) at one time. And, by NO MEANS, should you save, keep arcanum runnin, edit the game, then try to load it. This can lead to your character standing naked, next to a man and a treasure chest. This man with the treasure chest is the shopkeeper from which you buy your starting equipment; however, since he's not actually on any part of Arcanum, you're screwed if you ever find him.
You can get back out. Go back to the tomb and on the floor on the right side should be a hidden door. I had a similar problem with Alexander while playing with a mod, though not that bad! I found his family sword, but he wouldn't take it back, and I think you get a fate point for returning it!
