One Night, At A Bar

Yes, it's time for more Xiao-Fic!

Because Brin and Pavel are cute, because Michael is a pervert, and because Darian is the perfect foil to Michael. And because I wanted to write something dialogue-only, to see if I can actually pull it off.

“I don’t get it.”

“Hm?”

“Why does she talk to him?”

“Because he’s capable of participating in a sensible conversation?”

“What was that?”

“Nothing your ego couldn’t handle, Michael, I’m sure.”

“Man, why did she have to have red hair? I’ve never been able to resist redheads!”

“I’m sure that I’m going to regret this, but… Why can’t you resist redheads?”

“They’re so feisty! … Stop laughing, damn it! It’s not that bloody funny, Darian.”

“You have noticed that she’s shy, haven’t you? You know, the exact opposite of feisty?”

“I hate you so much.”

“I noticed.”

“… but why him?”

“Does the phrase ‘one track mind’ mean anything to you?”

“You’re hardly one to talk. Seriously, though, why him? Why not me, or you, or even that dickhead Adrian?”

“Are you sure you want me to answer that question?”

“Yes.”

“Because he’s smarter than she is.”

“Bullshit.”

“Oh, and to put it in the ever-so-charming words you like to use, she ‘likes ‘em clever’.”

“Again, bullshit.”

“The thought that she’s not interested in your much-vaunted prowess really bothers you, doesn’t it?”

“Once more, with clarity.”

“You don’t like the fact that she knows about your talents in the bedroom and still isn’t interested.”

“There’s not a woman alive who can resist me.”

“And yet there she is, talking to Pavel, while you sit back here and whine to me.”

“…I really, really hate you.”

“I know.”

“I should just go over there and…”

“Your brain doesn’t do any thinking at all, does it.”

“I…”

“Hate me, I know.”

“You’ve got some clever little piece of advice under that smirk, I can tell. Out with it.”

“It will only annoy you.”

“Everything you say pisses me off, why would your advice be any bloody different?”

“Very well. Michael, you’ve been here for, what, two months? How many women have you bedded in that time?”

“Three months, and… hang on… Nineteen.”

“So go and find number twenty and let the boy get the girl.”

“…”

“…”

“Say, Darian, can I buy you a drink?”

“There isn’t enough alcohol in the world, Michael.”

I really enjoyed writing that. Michael and Darian are funny.

 

Shockingly, you have quite a bit of talent. Not shocking because it's you, but shocking because it's a bunch of outcasts on an internet forum. You should put together some complete stories and see if you can sell them. This is easily better than most Dragonlance stuff, so somebody in the fantasy world should be interested.

 

Rosie is right; you really should send these stories to someone in the fantasy world. Perhaps it will even be publish, and sold to the bookstores.

Nice work again, Xiao. Quality stuff, interesting and amusing. As Arthgon and Rosie said, you really ought to try your hand at making some form of success from it. It'd be a crying shame to let it go to waste.

Aw, shucks guys... *blush* These characters are part of something big I'm working on, and I have to admit that I'm seriously considering putting this scene in, and maybe not even adding any action. The dialogue carries the characters so well.

Ah, Michael and Darian are so much fun to bounce off each other. I especially like "Your brain doesn't do any thinking at all, does it." I have this wonderful mental image of Darian saying that, completely straight-faced, without so much as a smile or a raised eyebrow... :lol:

 

Another piece of great writing. Let me know when and if you ever do publish these. I'll go down to the local Barnes & Noble and preorder it!

I really would pay some money for it. Do you have someone or some people, who can read it first, so you will know what would work, and which of the things has to be changed?

 

I used to have a beta reader of sorts, but he's fucked off down to Hobart for Uni and we barely talk any more. My other beta readers either never actually read the stuff I send them or never finish any of it. *sigh*

 

I tried reading that, but sorting out who was who was too much for me at the moment. It looks very good. I'd be more than happy to beta-things for you. I'd even come to Australia, and stay with you, if needed.
