In advance, I know that I have to get thne King's quest for taxes to acquire Dante, and that I have to have a spot open for him--or tell a follower to wait, first. However, none of these seem to work. Dante explains who he is, and I mention the change of allegience in the city. He also offers to heal me for a fee. When I ask if there's anything else I can do for him, he says there isn't. He's amiable--70%, I think. I'm running a female elf mage, roughly neutral at the moment in alignment.

Any suggestions for how to get the dialog going which allows Dante to join me? He would seem to be a natural, what with Virgil along. ;)

Hmm that's strange. Neutral alignment should be enough, but if you're even slightly on the evil side, he probably won't join you. Then, again, I haven't played females yet. Dante is a VERY useful follower though, his ST goes as high as 20, his melee skills are quite decent, he is an excellent healer and knows Force magic. Sadly, he also learns Air and sometimes casts Body of Air on himself, becoming useless. Have you already got the taxes? If you have, it may be a lost case, even if you haven't delivered them.

I did get the dagger back for the Mayor, so he changed alliances. But when I asked about the taxes, he just laughed; and when I checked my quest log, it was still listed. Could Dante's ability to follow me have been tied to returning the dagger?

My mage's moral alignment is currently 4.

I just went back to an older save--and now, Dante is willing to discuss his Church and the King, which leads naturally into an offer to join. Apparently returning the dagger and swapping Black Root's allegience was sufficie to cut off this limb of dialog.

I never talk to the mayor before Dante.

If you have the mayor's dagger, you must use it to blackmail him into switching. If you meerly return it, he will say thanks & do nothing else.

If you are an evil 1/2 Orc female, Dante will be more than a little rude.

Nothing wrong with talking to Dante after you talk to the Mayor. That's what I usually do, anyway. He still joins in.

Actually, I did blackmail him into switching allegiences, and he agreed. But then, when I asked him about coughing up the taxes, he told me to forget it.

I did the same thing, and he told me to forget it. However, he had already given me the gold. Check your inventory. You mght already have it. Just a silly dialogue glitch, of which there are many.

Dante may only join you to help you get the taxes to return him to favor with the king. You can keep him after that, but that's why he joins you. Thus there might be a problem if you'd already done the quest he's there to help you do.
