Happy Thanksgiving to all of you Americans (a day late)!

Let's all get together people most of us avoid the rest of the year, feast on food of which a good portion will probably go to waste and never be eaten, and celebrate our nation's theft of land from the native population, and then their whole-sale butcher!

...I actually had a wonderful time, I get along with my family amazingly well, we don't waste any food, and I'm sympathetic towards the natives, their casinos, and alcoholism.

Tsh. To think that a non-native English speaker gets to be a grammar nazi. Oh the shame.

I've had to fail two thirds of a class of 3rd year students on their written assignments this week, so I guess I'm just being extra stingy.

Knowing the calibre of students my mother is taking for second and third year statistics...

Poor, poor DE. You unlucky bastard. In solidity, I shall share something from an essay that my mother showed me in utter disbelief.

The word the student was looking for was, we presume, demonstrated.

    What we got was demon-straightened.

I still want to know how the girl in question made it to third year.

The one time I ever marked essays I failed a guy for using American spelling. His excuse of 'Thats what spell check said' were not good enough especially considering the essay was supposed to be hand written.

Is American English generally considered incorrect in Australian education, or was that just you?

Love it. That's how I'm going to write it from now on.

It might have involved giving the professor a quickie in the alley behind the university.

We use the UK version with a few modifications. Not knowing how to change the settings in Microsoft Word is not a good enough excuse to change our whole written language.

Am I the only person on this forum who isn't a English professor?

I'm not. I occasionally do substitute teaching but only for math courses.

Ironically, I've actually considered it of late.

Wasn't Xiao's mother the professor in question?

I've been a teaching assistant for a few English classes, helping out my English teacher, who doesn't believe in gender or eyebrows.

As much as I'd love the excuse...

Xiao's family is spared the humiliation of having passed that girl through English class.

My mum's a professor, but of maths. When she's not sure of spelling, she asks me. :D I love being a writer.

What was wrong? How about everything? The spelling, the grammar, the use of sources, the general coherence of their works... facepalm-inducing material all.

Mind you, the subject wasn't English either, it was Swedish. It stabs my heart to see people at that age and academic level mistreat their native tongue like that.
