What spells do NPCs actually use? I'm asking this because with the Arcanum Follower Editor i was wondering if levelling Virgil in other magic schools would be useful.
I don't have insight into the mage AI, but since it would be probably quite some time before anyone with that kind of experience would answer your post, allow me to answer this question from a player's point of view. What I did below is copied the spell list from our page and coloured those spells which my humble self recalls witnessing being cast by NPCs. Green spells - I'm sure I have seen it being cast by an NPC Yellow spells - I think I've seen it being cast by an NPC, but I wouldn't bet my life on it Grey spells - it either can't be cast by NPCs or I was too unsure to risk marking it even as yellow Violet spell colleges - It's quite possible some of the gray/yellow spells from them can be cast by NPCs, but I generally have too little experience with witnessing NPCs knowing those colleges in action to be sure As you will see, there's a lot of uncertainty, but I hope you will find the list useful nonetheless. Hpefully the list will be supplemented by the observations of other users. Air: Vitality of Air - Level 1 Poison Vapours - Level 2 Call Wind - Level 3 Body of Air - Level 4 Call Air Elemental - Level 5 Black Necromatic: Harm - Level 1 Conjure Spirit - Level 2 Summon Undead - Level 3 Create Undead - Level 4 Quench Life - Level 5 Conveyance: Disarm - Level 1 Unlocking Cantrip - Level 2 Unseen Force - Level 3 Spatial Distortion - Level 4 Teleport - Level 5 Divination: Sense Alignment - Level 1 See Contents - Level 2 Read Aura - Level 3 Sense Invisible - Level 4 Divine Magick - Level 5 Earth: Strength of Earth - Level 1 Stone Throw - Level 2 Wall of Stone - Level 3 Body of Earth - Level 4 Call Earth Elemental - Level 5 Fire: Agility of Fire - Level 1 Wall of Fire - Level 2 Fireflash - Level 3 Body of Fire - Level 4 Call Fire Elemental - Level 5 Force: Shield of Protection - Level 1 Jolt - Level 2 Wall of Force - Level 3 Lightning Bolt - Level 4 Disintegrate - Level 5 Mental: Charm - Level 1 Stun - Level 2 Drain Will - Level 3 Nightmare - Level 4 Dominate Will - Level 5* Meta: Resist Magick - Level 1 Disperse Magick - Level 2 Dweomer Shield - Level 3 Bonds of Magick - Level 4 Reflective Shield - Level 5 Morphing: Hardened Hands - Level 1 Weaken - Level 2 Shrink - Level 3 Flesh to Stone - Level 4 Polymorph - Level 5 Nature: Charm Beast - Level 1 Entangle - Level 2 Control Beast - Level 3 Succour Beast - Level 4 Regenerate - Level 5 Phantasm: Illuminate - Level 1 Flash - Level 2 Blur Sight - Level 3 Phantasmal Fiend - Level 4 Invisibility - Level 5 Summoning: Plague of Insects - Level 1 Orc Champion - Level 2 Guardian Ogre - Level 3 Hellgate - Level 4 Familiar - Level 5 Temporal: Magelock - Level 1 Congeal Time - Level 2 Hasten - Level 3 Stasis - Level 4 Tempus Fugit - Level 5 Water: Purity of Water - Level 1 Call Fog - Level 2 Squall of Ice - Level 3 Body of Water - Level 4 Call Water Elemental - Level 5 White Necromatic: Minor Healing - Level 1 Halt Poison - Level 2 Major Healing - Level 3 Santuary - Level 4 Resurrection - Level 5 *You don't want to give this to your follower, though. Enemies dominated by him won't attack him, but they will attack you, and since the game will recognize them as your allies, damaging them will be tricky.
Wow, thank you for your answer =D, very helpful! It's my first playthrough, so I didn't have the slightest idea about this.
It's not that big of a secret, actually. You can find the AI casting info in rules\SpellList.mes. Anyway, here's the full list: Conveyance: Disarm Unseen Force Spatial Distortion Divination: None Air: Vitality of Air Poison Vapours Call Winds Body of Air Call Air Elemental Earth: Strength of Earth Stone Throw Body of Stone Call Earth Elemental Fire: Agility of Fire Fireflash Body of Fire Call Fire Elemental Water: Purity of Water Call Fog Squall of Ice Body of Water Call Water Elemental Force: Shield of Protection Jolt Bolt of Lightning Disintegrate Mental: Stun Drain Will Nightmare Dominate Will Meta: Resist Magic Disperse Magic Bonds of Magick Reflection Shield Morph: Hardened Hands Weaken Shrink Flesh to Stone Polymorph Other Nature: Entangle Succor Beast Necromantic (Evil): Harm Summon Undead Quench Life Necromantic (Good): Minor Healing Halt Poison Major Healing Ressurrect Phantasm: Flash Blur Sight Phantasmal Fiend Invisibility Summon: Plague of Insects Orcish Champion Guardian Ogre Hellgate Familiar Temporal: Congeal Time Hasten Stasis Tempus Fugit
Wow again, thanks a lot =D Now I have to ask, when do they cast non-battle spells like Purity of Water?
Purity of Water is actually marked as a "defensive" spell for NPCs, so they cast it in combat. Silly, I know.
