i was watching a show about the guy last night, and i was wondering if anyone here believes his prophecies. i for one don't, mainly because he wrote so many of them that you can find a prophecy to match any event you want, if you just look hard enough. any other opinions?

I believe that there is truth in his prophecies, particularly the one that said the world would end in 1997 and the other one that said the second coming of Christ (oo-er, I hope Nobodie makes a comment about that) would be in the year 2000.

I don't actually know all that much about Nostrodamus, to tell the truth. I saw a book of interpretations of his stuff once, but only flicked through it. From what little I've, I'd think the main problem with his prophecies is the amount of interpretation they require, which makes them only as good as the interpreter. Sure, we may have had the divinely inspired prophet, but maybe the people writing the explanations are just people who weren't talented enough to get a publishing deal for a proper book.

I have a general aversion to believing in things. I think I'd be a sceptic, but I don't believe in scepticism.

well, among other things, he's supposed to have predicted the manner of death of King Henry II, the rise of Hitler, the discoveries of Louis Pasteur, and the falling of the twin towers here in America. only problem being that no one saw any of these prophecies till after the events had already happened, when the conveniently appeared to explain them. in fact, Hitler himself found the passage that's supposed to predict his rise. even though he was openly against the black arts, he hired a seer to find prophecies naming him the ruler of the world--and then when Germany began to lose the war, he sent his seer to a camp as punishment for being wrong. so there's alot of room for skepticism...

Fact: Nostradamus was a pretty good physician that had the right idea about hygiene.

Fiction: He told the future through his lame quatrains.

I don't buy that shit about his predictions at all. Maybe my opinion will change once one of his many interpreters predicts an event rather than writes a book and does interviews after the fact saying, "See Nostradamus told you so."

I realize that even if you can only "see the truth" of his predictions afterwards, that doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't really telling the future. It doesn't go far towards his credibility, though, in my opinion.

EDIT - Wow, Sheriff's back! I'll add that I'll believe Nostradamus if he predicted that.

Unless a prophecy is so damn specific, that dates, times, people and places are named, then I'm pretty sceptical of them. As rosie said, if you can find a prophecy you can wrangle it around till it fits an event, and then claim the prophecy predicted. Of course, it only predicted it under a certain interpretation/set of conditions, which almost certainly wasn't part of the prophecy.

Kinda sucks that the world ended in '97. I kinda woulda liked to see if my penis grew any more.

I think that Nostradumbass makes for a good read, or a good 1 hour made-for-TV special airing at 3:00 A.M. That's it.

the great thing about it is that everyone is able to form their own opinion on him.

even scholars debate someone that wrote some deliberately obscure babblings in poetic form 200 years ago.

do I believe his quatrains predict future events? that is hard to say. there is no clear yes or no with him and his writings.

Am I fascinated by him, his writings, and the ongoing debate of them both? very much so. my views of him have changed greatly over the years. I know much about him as a person, his life, lifestyle, writings, quatrains, and supposed predictions. Even my major in psychology cannot lead me to a clear decision!? :/

<EDIT> retard, as always, I find your post most amusing and find myself looking forward to the next bit of wit you utter forth :D

The problem with this sort of "prophecies" is that they can only be interpreted in hindsight. Nostradamus's writings are so vague you can interprete each of them in a bunch of different ways, and of course some people can always draft a version that would suit the real events. I don't believe it one bit. Even the work of those guys who were looking for hidden codes in the Hebrew text of the Old Testament had more credibility.

I believe from predictions that I am supposed to be under water right now. For a massive quake was supposed to happen and cause Washington State to fall under the ocean...and parts of California was meant to split off into an island...

Course, there was a massive quake here....but none big enough to do any major damage...sometimes predictions do come true...other times, they don't.

Wasnt there a thread a few months ago detailing the conspiracy of the lizard people, and their control of every aspect of our society? Was nostradamus entioned in that wacko's manifesto? I tried to go back and find the thread but I cant remember any other details about it so the search option was useless and looking through the last ten pages of threads put me to sleep. So yeah, just wondering.

You mean, the thread about the David Icke guy? I'm fairly sure Nostradamus is never mentioned. Dunno why you'd think so.

Well I figure the guy needs to sell books to rednecks, and they already buy shitloads of nostradamus crap, therefore itd be good marketing to tie Nostro' into his conspiracy theory.

    1) That was ohh so off topic.

    2) It's not a vampire either. It's an elf from ToEE.

That being said, I tend not to put stock into any predictionary ramblings of any kind. I'm in agreement with Jar here - a blurry composition of words that could be applied to most any situation doesn't qualify in my book.

"ToEE" stands for "Temple of Elemental Evil" and it's a new game from Troika.
