DIdnt there used to be fairly inexpensive lamps or something you could buy if you were a techy character who didn't want to harm your weak starting tech aptitude by learning illumination?

I keep checking all the shops in shadygrove and so far nobody there has displayed any sort of light producing item whatever.

Is it possible the only way to get one is to build your own?

Well the lantern and electric light provide illumination, but only when enemies/objects are right on top of you. Some brilliant techy really needs to invent a flashlight.

SOmehow I had totally missed the free latern in the toone mine.

You're right though the thing casts a feeble pool of light. awesome for things like melee or lockpicking or other hands on activities but quite useless for ranged combat.

I wonder if I would be getting in over my head to try to find out how to mod a tech item to make a really huge pool of light?

What about the Miners Helmet? I'm not sure how well it works, but you get a free one at the Wheel Clan.

If anything, maybe Tongs could modify it to be more useful?

You can buy/find lanterns, you can make them into electrical light (first schematic of the electrical), eventually you can make a miner's helmet. But there is no way for a techie to illuminate things at a distance.

I'll tell you what I do for ranged combat though- I equip my followers with light generating things- usually Helms of Light for the neutral/magick specialized ones, lanterns/electrical lights/miner's helmets for the techies. Once in combat, your melee oriented friends run forward, thereby illuminating the target for you.

I was wondering if that worked!

I tried doing that by puting laterns in the shield slots of my shieldless followers and it did seem to help. I also found that laterns are indeed sold in shrouded hills but that I had to refresh stores a few times before I saw any.

The problem is that your followers get in the way and thus block you from shooting anyway.

    At least in my experience.

Personally I think the "Electric Light" should have been a "Flashlight"... or "directed light device". Then it would actually be worth building.

how hard would it be to modify goggled helmet so that it also eliminated light penalties?

I don't know, I'm not much of a modder or programmer/coder. I immagine it is tied to scripts, perhaps? So if you could write or modify a script and attatching it to the "Goggled Helmet" proto it might work.

It's not done by scripts. Only hex editing would work. The editing required for this particular effect is pretty unfathomable.

However there is a fairly simple way around this. Take the miner's helmet. Attach a PE bonus script. That's it.
You can change the graphic to that of the goggled helm too, if you really want to.

I love that idea! is it too ambitious for me to try something like that for my first edit?
