One of my companions, Gar to be exact, has gotten rather suspicious of me as of late. Not sure why, really. But in any event, I remember reading somewhere that certain items can placate your followers, in this case the grey tea he so loves. But how exactly do I employ this tactic? Do I "use" it on him or do I simply put it in his inventory. Neither strategy seems to make any real difference. Can someone steer me in the right direction on this suject

Don't worry until his reaction gets to 20. At that point you can engage him in conversation and ask him what's wrong, and whether there's anything you can to for him. He'll ask for the tea.

You might wish to discover what's caused his reaction drop. If you're not patched, there's a nasty combat bug which could have caused it.

Thanks for the advice. I am patched. His current state of disatisfaction with me is 40, so I assume he will not leave me at this point. Perhaps, I accidently struck him during the heat of battle.

Gar is a good guy. His reaction drops if you kill good people, pick pocket too much or do something that causes your alighnment to go down.
Ways to boost his reaction up:
Up your beauty (it results in general people's reaction boost)
    Wear a Smoking Jacket
Get him killed (in a fight, mind you, don't kill him yourself, just strip him off his armor and let him into a melee with a decent size beast), then resurrect him.
The Earl Grey tea is an "emergency" thing, when his reaction drops REALLY low.

Oh, 40 ain't that bad. You've still got a good margin before he leaves. If it bothers you, you could always put a point or two in Beauty (in case you could spare them, that is). I like to do that. I once had an elven fighter with maxed out Beauty. Everyone loved me.
