This is another one of my "A few months after the rest of the world" game reviews. This won't be even a real review, a question rather to other people who played this game. Is it really so bad or is it just my impression? Graphic is great, sound is very good, performance is not too good but it isn't terrible, as for stability it is better after the patch. What bothers me is that this game is mostly like Icewind Dale rather than even Baldur's Gate 1, not to mention part 2. I thought it would get better after the beginning - after all it was obivous that in order to catch the four creatures I have to go to four places, kill some enemies and get back. Mundane, boring, could be done a lot better but what the hell - it's just the beginning. Then, when I wait for the cure to be made so that I would finally set off on an adventure, awaiting my freedom to at least choose to which location I want to go, awaiting more or less interesting sidequests I get... go through the portal and clear out Helmites stronghold. I just can't go anywhere else. Is the whole game like it? Becaue to me it is simply boring. Another bad thing is that the game is mean to me. I chose to be proficient in Longswords and along my way all +1 weapons I found were everything but a longsword. I finally bought one. Seriosuly which weapons come in largest quantities? I mean unique weapons, besides these lousy +1 you can buy. I never really looked forward to nwn holding my breath but since I got it I thought that at tleast I would have some fun - so does this game get better later on or is it just Icewind Dale from beginning to an end?
My advice to you Dragoon, is can the SP campaign RIGHT NOW and go download some modules from Neverwinter Vault. Pay attention to reviews and ratings, maybe even browse the module section of Bioware NWN forums to get a feel for which modules are the best to play. I'm warning you, you SHOULD heed this advice. I gave the same advice to my brother, and he ignored it. He played the SP campaign to the point where he got bored (still in Chapter 1, I think) and never tried a module. Now the game is gathering dust for him. The value of NWN is entirely in its enabling of module making players. The single player campaign is dull and not worth the time and effort.
Thanks for the advice Sheriff - I just read a review of a War of the Yellow Fang module and I am downloading it right now. It's nice that it's only 1,5MB. It's not nice that it's such a pain to find the download button at NWN vault.
You could also try making some maps on your own, if you understand the editor. But I liked the single player, it was alright, and it's really nothing like Ice Winds dale or anything like that, it's more of a Diablo like game, cause you can only have 1 partner and you walk around like Diablo and stuff, so I would say it's more like a diablo based RPG.
NTNTNPTO -> No time, No talent, No Pleasure Tormenting Others What I referred to is the fact that you have literally no freedom of choice as to what you will do next. It all goes down to dungeon by dungeon monsters bashing boredom. You can compare it either to ID or Diablo - in case of this aspect two games are identical. And I got bored like hell by both of them. I did enjoy Diablo 1 thoguh for reasons that escaped my memory.
You do have a point about the freedom thing, the game did have a good plot though, it could have been better by giving you a bigger chance to do stuff. They said it would be EXACTLY like Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition, but I found many mistakes that they did on that game. Over all, it was a good game, I would probaly give it a 7 or 8, but that's just me....
i started playing NWN for the first time a few weeks ago (hence my lack of attendence lately) and i've completly enjoyed it..... sure it is very repetitive with quests, being go to point a, kill person b, collect item c, return for reward, which can be found in every game, (that i've played atleast).... but what has got me engrossed is the character development, where every time you lvl up you can pick another class entirely if you wanted to, it's these types of originality that make a game IMO, hey look at arcanum mixing tech and magick...... gotta admit it was original.
It's refreshing to hear about someone enjoying the game so much. It has had a lot of harsh commentary, both justified and spurious.
NWN is possibly one of the most dissapointing games of all time but is the game that would win the "Most like Diablo" award. The story just keeps going and going and going and is oh so very predictable. If you could play the first chapter about 4 times then you can play the game from beginning to end. There is no choice in the game except for how you level up. One more thing; the game is designed more for multiplayer. Play Ice Wind Dale 2 instead.
