I can only go on what my friend tells me, since I have not seen the letter, but he was quite clear that a 1998 legal act was cited and that evidence of not intending to becomes an illegal imigrant was needed.

We let new immigrants vote now?
    When did that happen?

Last I knew you had to be an American citizen to cast a vote.

Ahh, I get it now. It sounds like they wanted an itinerary or a list of places he was going to visit and where he was going to stay. That doesn't sound so unreasonable. If any country were to hand out holiday visas with no questions asked, then that would open the floodgates to illegal immigration.

Maybe he could reapply with this extra information included?

Now, ya see, this is interesting. You're talking about him as an immigrant when I made it quite clear he was only after a holiday.

Do holiday makers get to vote democrat too?

Just to clear up any cross language misunderstandings:

    Holiday = Vacation

He only wanted to vacation in the US and was rejected and now that rejection will be appearing on a visa that he needs for work. Which means that now he could loose work simply cause he wanted to spend his money in the US instead of somewhere else.

    Question:
Had he ever been to the states b4? I am wonder because it seems to me that if he had been then he should not have had so much of a problem. (I'm guessing I don't really know much about Visa's and our governing laws on them)

I forgot that there was a Republican in the White House in 1998. Was she the one with the President's dick in her mouth?

Anyway, how can you prove that you plan to return after your vacation is over? You would think return tickets that have already been purchased would be enough. Especially for what he paid for them.

I'm not sure what kind of proof they expected. He did have return tickets. Maybe they would let him over if he was visiting relatives and had letters to say so.

Maybe I should write a letter, as his supervisor, and convince them that no right minded individual would employ him for work, no matter how menial.

(actually, that's not fair, he's a best developer)

If you want I will write him a letter claiming that he was supposed to come and visit me because he is my long lost brother and now I can't see him so I am emotionally disturbed (which I am) and I will be forced to sue the Immigration Service for $1 dillion in emotional damages.

Having thoroughly been derailed, this thread will now return to topic:

Sheriff, as near as I can figure from reading the 1998 Immigration Law, holiday (vacation) visas fall under the category of immigration visas. Thus, one must provide evidence that one is not going to be illegally working in the country, and will be leaving after the specified time. Apparently, there was considerable problem with people getting into the country on temporary visas and then taking up illegal residence (and, of course, taking jobs).

Hope this makes some sort of sense...

It does make sense, but I have travelled several times to the USA on both business and pleasure, without ever being required to produce and evidence. It bothers me that I can do it easily, but my friend can't, and the only thing dividing us is the location of our birth.

From my point of view, my friend is very similar to me. He works at the same company, and has done for about the same time. He earns not much less. He is a stable, reasonable person - just like me ;) - and was brought up by decent people. His mum stayed with us for quite a while, and she's great, and his sister lives over here too and is ... er ... very similar to a lot of youngish girls, I have met.

That’s what pisses me off in the whole affair. Especially that I was born in Poland and well it doesn’t seem to be the favourite country of customs officers.

Anyway as I might go to either England or US next year help me on things I could say during questioning to convince co, beyond reasonable doubt, that I will not stay in their beloved country.

    1. I’m terminally, yet not contagiously, ill and I will die unless I get back to my country in 3 months.
    2. I study law, so unless I win a lottery I couldn’t really afford to continue studies in your country, now could I?
    3. How could I possibly want to stay in a country where such $!@$@#%! like you get to decide others’ fate?
    4. You think I’ll stay? Hell no, I like tasty food.

If it is the UK you're interested in coming to, just try to mention Big Ben in every other sentence, then they'll assume you're a tourist.

the U.K. is one of the nations listed as having "exempted status" as regards this particular law.
