Howdy! I'm pretty new to modding Arcanum. I only have one question, as there is only one thing I really want to do! How can I create a module that uses the entire map from the Arcanum single-player campaign? My goal is just to explore the single player world in multiplayer with friends. I dont care about fast-travel or anything like that: I have no problem finding a way around the vast distances between places. Since I really dont know what I'm doing, this may seem silly, but here's what I've tried: I used DATBuilder to extract the files from "Arcanum1-024-fixed" (thinking I could use the whole map file I found in there with the world editor) and I just tried to merge it with an already existing DAT file. Frankly, it did not work: I could not open the newly created file in the world editor. Could anyone offer me some assistance in this matter? Or does such a module already exist? I've been looking for one, but all I could find was a post somewhere on google that someone was succeeding in doing it at home. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and my apologies if I sound foolish.
Well, for starters, in multiplayer everything has to be on a single map. The main Arcanum module, however, uses around 80 different maps, so you will have to merge all of them. Also, most of the scripts will have to be redone, as they're centered around a single PC. This is a lot of work.
I understand that it may end up being a lot of work, but I think it'll be worth it Are you sure I'll have to merge them all? Because when I open the file in WorldEd, it appears to load the entire world map, with cities and NPCs. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but couldnt I just use that map file? I just dont know how to go about doing it.
Yes, the whole worldmap is contained in a single map, however, all interiors (caves, dungeons, sewers, castles, etc) have their own maps.
I forgot to take that into consideration. Would you mind telling me how I could move that map into a playable multiplayer module?
Create a new module, put the map into the 'maps' folder, edit maplist.mes in the 'rules' folder. This guide explains the process in details.
Thank you! So far, I've managed to move the map to the multiplayer module. On my main computer, I can host and play in the game! Woo! However, one problem is persisting...When trying to connect with another person (on another computer I have here) their game crashes ("arcanum.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close"), even though I've copied the module into the other computers module folder. If I attempt to HOST the game on the other computer, it spawns him in the place you are looking at initially if you open the map with world ed, and then crashes a few moments later. Other modules work just fine: can you offer any assistance here? Sorry to cause so much hassle! Just for funzies: I've created a portal hub to link locations Not the most original idea ever, but hey, it works!
Hey lordc447, This "mod" is almost finished, if you wish to join and help with fixing/reporting bugs you found (you will need to work only with WorldEd) here is forum where will be that mod released: http://arcanum.game-alive.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=13 and here is video: http://arcanum.game-alive.com/post/95/ PS: I've made an tool that converts any singleplayer module to multiplayer, but I'm not sure what needs to be fixed in scripts (I've fixed only teleport locations), for example quests, whats needs to be changed in scripts to make them available for all players? What else needs to be changed in script?
