What is the best melee weapon can you suggest?

Since the spambot encouraged discussion, I'm letting it live. For now. Anyway, this thread refers to this peacefully resting one. - DF

We're using phpBB2, so it's no surprise that the spambots swarm in.

Include words like annoyance and stupidity in a syllogism and you could successfully argue that that is the case.

Back on topic, I have good experience with the Sword of Air for low ST characters, and the Balanced Sword, though I can't quite remember if it is tech or neutral.

The Balanced Sword is the second item in the Smithy discipline and is therefore technological. It doesn't have a high technological value however and I believe it's fairly safe to give it to low MA characters such as Virgil.

I'm curious as to the Isle of Despair sword. This is another quest I seem to have missed...

The most known mean of getting the permission to talk with Thorvald Two Stones is proving your worth by winning a fight with Borag the half ogre in the Pit. After leaving the Pit you can continue your winning strike by defeating several following opponents, if you wish. The first one coming after Borag is a female human bandit in some barbarian armor wielding, drum roll, the Sword. It looks like an ordinary Balanced Sword, so it's easy to ignore it.

Isn't its damage range something like 10 to 15? I can't remember what's actually all that great about it. Is it just that it always does moderately good damage?

I'm a fan of the katana for physically weak mage characters. It's light weight and it's almost as good as the Balanced Sword (similar damage, slightly slower) and it's neutral.

I like the Charged Sword when playing as a technologist because the random electrical damage is awesome sometimes. But since it's random, I find fights less boring than I would if I just annihilated every bad guy in my path.

A good factor measuring the destructive power of a weapon is Average Damage Per Action Point. It ignores additional damage coming from high Strength, but is good for initial analysis. Let us compare a few weapons with it.

The Barbarian Heavy Blade is a strong neutral weapon, requiring 20 in Strength to be used single-handedly without penalties.
The Barbarian Heavy Blade's ADPAP is 4,(6).
Both the Katana's and the Balanced Sword's ADPAP is 3,75.
What's the ADPAP of the Sword from the Isle of Despair? 6,25.

So yes, it's good. Nowhere near the impressive 21,25 ADPAP of the Kryggird's Falchion, but considering how early in the game it can be found, it's a really decent piece of weaponry.

PS. Just to make things clear, all values I posted were calculated for someone with at least apprentice training in Melee, meaning they would be lower for followers in most cases.

I've always just ignored that weapon, despite almost always butchering everyone to fight in the pit.

Considering I never play a neutral character (Melee fighters always have benefits of either going at least slightly technological or magickal), such swords are of no interest to me.

Granted, it's interesting to know this weapon even exists.

Thank you for explaining that for me. I guess I need to actually use the thing the next time I take it as a trophy.
