First: I would like to be able to set up a replacement map situation in an unmodified game. ie: Drop DAT5 into place and go.

What I've got is a remodeled Shrouded Hills Panarii interior. Gone is the abandoned warehouse look.

How would you go about telling the game to ignore the original map and use the new one?

Secondly, the town sign for Shrouded Hills is currently just scenery. I need to overwrite that so it now mentions the town hall and library.

You have to include the map in Arcanum.patch(number). Anything in the patch file will overwrite the existing data.

Here's what I did for signs:
    Take a sign post.
Put a pot lid or some other small item on top of each arrow in the sign.
Give the pot lids the names you want e.g. "EAST - Duffer's Homestead"
When you are sure you are finished, make the pot lids transparent. You will not be able to access them from this point on.

OK then, the next question is what do I use to edit or create the patch file?

The patch files are essentially dat files. You should be able to use the standard dat / undat utilities.

That is the best news I've heard all day. Thank you.

Hey, my computer is STUFFED! with programs that I only needed once or twice. The last thing I wanted to hear was that I needed yet another expensive bit of software.

No software is expensive on the Internet.
