Arcanum is by far my favorite game. So imagine my dismay that this game won't run on my new computer!!
    Does anybody have a fix?

Worked for me. Right click on the arcanum.exe file and set it's compatibility mode to Windows XP or Windows 2000.

sadly, that is the second thing I tried. the first being checking the administrator privilege box.
The game makes it all the way to the screen where I click 'start game' and as soon as i move my mouse, the whole computer, not just the game, freezes up on me and I have to hard boot.

Have you installed the video card drivers from your video card manufacturer or are you using the drivers that came with Vista?

You should download and install the original drivers from your video card manufacturer.

Have you tried re-installing? Are you patched?

Oh, and before I forget again, welcome to the House of Lords. :)

Same problem. I even tried running it before I re-patched it. I really do think that this is it. I can't think of any other solution.

Do you have an XP computer available for you to test an installation on?

yes, my husband's computer is an XP machine. It's actually the machine I played the game on for the first time. It's on there now in fact.
I'd just play it on his machine, but his is a desk top and mine is a lap top. Plus I"m usually wanting to play when he's on his computer playing his games.

    Are your disks scratched?

nope. they're in perfect condition. Do you think perhaps it's a problem with my machine and not the OS?

Well, the problem you are describing sounds like a video card/driver issue. So yes it's possibly a problem with your machine, however I think it's more likely that the windows vista drivers for your video card aren't sufficiently developed yet. Vista is still a young OS.

A young OS with no respect for its elders.

My decision to finally upgrade from Win98 is on hold until a solution is found.

I am having a similar problem; I just got my old Arcanum disks out, resurfaced them since they were somewhat abused, and installed. Lo and behold, the game will simply not start in Vista. I did all of the things suggested earlier in this thread, but am still stuck. If nothing else, you have my sympathy, BMWood.

At least I know I'm not alone. I now have support from fellow vista users and arcanum lovers. May the gods grant me the strength to kick the husbeast of his computer so that I may play....
