Whew, it's been ages since I've been here for the last time. Anyway, Arcanum is such a good game that one can't just stay too long without playing it. Recently, after my A-level exams, I'm planning to return to the madness. I already have a whole plan for my character and fallowers, but there are two vital things I must know before starting playing (I don't wan't to get past half of the game just to realise realise "Wow, you are screwed") which I couldn't find while browsing the boards with the search function. So, after this way too long introduction, here it goes:

    • What is the minimal strength required to use the long range pistol without any penalties?
    • What is the minimal strength required to use the long range pistol without any penalties while holding the electric light?

I believe that it's 12. Maybe 14. I know my current character can use it without any penalties, and it's one of my favorite guns, so let me give it a look, and I'll let you know for sure. (Unless someone knows & says before I respond)

    8. I think there isn't a penalty for using a light, since it's a one-handed weapon and not a weapon that is two-handed but which you are forcing to one-hand. Maybe DarkFool can back me up on this one.

    Prima's Official Strategy Guide says:
    6 str 2 handed
    8 str 1 handed

I checked and my character has 12 str, and is using LRP and a shield. So I don't know the minimum (ironically, I forgot to check on that while ingame). I would guess that Prima's guide is probably right, but I don't think that you technically wield pistols "two handed." I think it's simply 8.

No, wielding something in your off-hand actually increases the Strength requirement to wield an item. Give Virgil a bastard sword or the like and watch him use it with both hands - using it properly with a shield or lantern takes more strength. Same goes for guns.

a Kite Sword is a 2 handed weapon if you only have 1 or 2 Str. LOL but not many people will play a char with such low str.

*sarcasm* besides at 1 or 2 Str can you even lift a shield or lantern without being VERY encumbered?

In my experience, all you can wear is some clothes, a small weapon (though, why would you?) and a couple of potions before encumberance sets in. It's quite annoying really, but if you feel the urge to play an elf with sheltered childhood...

    Magick comes in handy.

Wait a second... how could I miss this? There is a strategy guide for Arcanum...?

Okay, I have a really important question that I want you to look up the answer for. Does the guide explain why troika hated us? I have asked myself this question since I started modding. Then again, if it has naked pictures of anyone who used to work at Troika, say at the back, that would also work for me.

EDIT: Here's how minimum strength works:

For a 1-handed item (modders: "two handed" weapon flag not set), the MSR is the value set by the weapon. For balanced sword and long range pistol, this is 8. If one's other hand is free, there is a bonus of -2 to MSR, presumably by using one's second hand to steady the weapon while using. Hence, wielding a long range pistol with nothing in the other hand requires 6 MSR, while using a lantern requires 8 MSR, but regardless, the actual MSR of the item is 8.

For two-handed items (modders: "two handed" weapon flag is set), those that can be used with one hand (modders: "hand count fixed" flag not set) will suffer a penalty of 4 MSR. So, a broadsword has an MSR of 14 and is intended to be used two-handed, but it can be used with a shield with 18 MSR. Regardless, its actual MSR is 14.

Obviously, items like rifles can never be used with only one hand, so there won't be any bonuses or penalties.

    1: nope
    2: no nudes

the Guide is useful it like pickups what the manual left out and it has Quest thumbnails. I tend to keep the page open to where I can find all mentors and their names so I don't skip to many towns just to go back to get training.

WOW I thought EVERYONE that is a regular here had one, thats why I never brought it up. first time I bought Arcanum the guide was sitting on the shelf with other game guides I lost the instal disk a few times but always knew where the guide was even after 2.5 years of not playing Arcanum.

I think I only started looking at forums this month tho, I always had guide but I was a Terra Arcanum fan for years. ever since I got Arcanum with was probably about 6 months after it got released.

edit: if you guys didn't know about the guide maybe The Dungeon of Lost Souls is real? it is not mentioned in the guide tho but nether is ANYTHING related to multiplayer in the guide.

that's because troika just possibly fucked up multiplayer. Apparently, it can be used, but only if you use a certain program to establish your connection or something. Who was it who figured out how to do it? anyway, there aren't or never were any servers or something was wrong with the connections.

if the lost dungeon of souls is as real as multiplayer, then it'll probably crash once you start it up... heh

I love how alive the House of Lords is, it always good to know how many people have in mind the pure genius of this game.
Anyhow, thanks for all of the responses. Now I know that the will be no lnog range pistol + electric light for mr Payne, therefore my plans for the game must be a little changed. It's a pitty, of course I coudl always use the vivifier on him, but it comes so late and it's to good to use on a follower.
Or... If the long range pistol + electric light requires 8 str, andFranklin has 7, how much of a penalty would he recieVE?

if you're desperate to get him some lighting for his firearms, you should get him the miner's helmet. Then he wouldn't have to carry an electric light. ...unless you gave him some eye gear or goggled helmet, but I thought he already started with mad PE and firearms skills

The problem is I have some strict RPG rules for my game. For example, my company will be a bunch of gentleman, so all of us will have to wear nice suits or smoking jackets (except for the half ogre security which will wear large manservant's uniform) and only one hand weapons (such as elegant pistols or electric swords, cause they are both noble and with a sense of high technology), top hats etc, while the second hand would be equiped with an electric lights to make or ways through dungeons and so alike. Imagining that seems too cool.

I too thought that everyone around here had one.

The Dungeon of Lost Souls Scenario, on the other hand... Now THAT is quite the mystary.

I'ven't ever vested much weight into Prima's guide. I've one for Diablo & Diablo 2, but that's because they came with D2 for free. :p I would rather save my few bucks and go hunt down the info online.

IMHO the weapon strength requirements in that guide are very useful, especially when you plan every single character point before even starting a game (I don't know how many suck kind of wackos are there, but I'm for sure one of them). Also the chance of finding items in shops may be good when one has serious problems when getting something, although in a certain way it kills some some from the game (the suprise when you find something in a store that was never before, even if you were there sooo many times).
As for the costs, you could always find a torrent and download it. However, to be politicially correct on an official game board, I must say that would be an example of some highly inappropriate behavior.

No, you're not the only one who plans all that stuff out - I used to, many years ago, when i was making my first few inventors. I also had to plan things out so I could have a dwarf persuasive enough to have every single other dwarf and technologist join his party, but also have firearm skills and know almost every learned schematic. I even planned out what level I had to be when i got to certain areas so that my followers would be the same level as me.

If you're thinking about the role playing thing, why not have the half-ogre bodyguard carry the light? He's strong enough and it would probably be his job, anyway.

    lol. well said.
