I've never had any problems with collected from Langley except the one time I left town after talking to him. When you talk to him, you have to ask him about the money in the first set of options or it doesn't come up again. I always talk to him then spend time cleaning out the sewers or the Boil or killing Orc thieves or doing the other quests in town to kill time and rack up experience points while I wait. I usually manage to gain at least 4 or 5 levels during the course of the 5 days and I never take any money up front. Maybe I'm too trusting? The one time I left town, he spent the money and made me wait another 5 days.
