Don't think the throat grab was necessary, police get in all kinds of shit if they were to do that over in Australia.

Seems like a great idea to me. After you body slam a guy, you never know if he's going to get belligerent and start throwing punches. Having a firm hand on his throat would forestall or cut short any violent reaction. It may seem harsh, but you can't let your guard down because you never know who you're dealing with.

Maybe in America but in Australia that kind of force isn't necessary, all they are allowed to do is throw you to the ground and hold you down. I think that particular policeman got caught up in the moment and took it out on that guy. I didn't see him try to restrain the arms I just saw him talking in his ear and then bam body slam.

Zanza, it sounds like you live in a different Australia than I, and watched a different video too.

Police can hurt you plenty, after they've said, "stop or else!"

The guy was deliberately keeping his arms up and resisting with a fair amount of strength.

It's disappointing, but only if you expect better in the first place.

The cop shouldn't have to wrestle the guy's arms behind his back. You follow the rules, you don't have to worry about the cops. You break the rules, don't be surprised when you get arrested. And if you resist arrest, don't be surprised when you get body slammed, tased, hosed down with pepper spray or just generally roughed up.

Nonsense. The police choose their level of militant reaction and I've often seen them choose in favor of excessive. I believe a police officer would rather slam me to the ground that open the patrol car door for me so that I can admit myself to his vehicle.

I agree with Japes; the police have to use force when necessary (not to say that it is necessary every time, like in DE's vid.). I don't know what demonstration, or whatever it was, those people in the first video were doing, but nevertheless, they put the police in a position where they had to use force, since they were obviously resisting arrest. TDC is talking about a completely different thing when he says that polices officers choose to use excessive force, since that's neither here nor there, in relation to what Japes is saying.

A debate post from Wayne, and yet...

    No tortuous run-on sentences.

    No mention of logical fallacies.

    No sarcasm.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH WAYNE-SCALES?

wayne-scales, I appreciate your clarification of the points being discussed.

Speaking to those points, I agree that police officers are authorized to use force when the situations call for it. As far as I'm concerned, it's a good thing that we arm them.

I'm a bit sensitive on at what point force is necessary. If somebody is behaving violently then by all means approach him with equal or greater force to protect yourself and others. If somebody is flapping around the Jefferson Memorial, not posing a threat to anybody, then I'd say slamming him to the ground is uncalled for.

I can't imagine how humiliating it must have been to be arrested by somebody wearing a bicycle helmet.

Police aren't allowed to strike you or use what could be considered lethal holds (throat grab). This is why whenever it happens you see it on the news and usually the police officer in question is punished depending on the severity of the matter. This being said they do carry guns even though they shouldn't (even the police themselves prefer not to), this means that they can open fire on someone only if they feel their life is in significant danger. This is only what I have researched so far though, my sources being one of my close friends who is a police officer and the information the police provide. I am actually going to be applying to join the police by the end of the year so I will have better information for you then if you wish to continue.

Where abouts in Australia are you talking about ytzk?
