I spent 3 years in a boring but stable and easy web dev position. It was so bad it made me go back to school.

If given the choice, I'd pick the highly paid shitty job over a nice one with ok payouts. The simple reasoning behind this choice is that I can decide what to do with the money, while my job satisfaction is pretty much limited to the office. I see that as something-for-something.

For example, I'd probably be more happy doing coke and hookers after work then getting compliments from my boss during office hours.

In that case, i would rather go with pay, but having a non-office work, where i can actually develop my skills and play a lot of characters while gettin' a truckload of amusement, i can't really complain.

I'd say you'd want to go to one extreme or the other though. I mean, I've ended up taking the middle road, and it's kind of annoying because I alternate between thinking I could be earning more, or that I could have a more interesting job. You either want to sell your soul for a massive payoff that lets you effectively retire early and never worry about money again, or else you want something that you look forward to doing every day. Half-selling your soul doesn't really work out.

A third way might be to do something where you can switch your brain off or clock out early, which would then mean you aren't too tired during your free time, and can do the things you want to do after work without falling asleep in the middle of them.

And if you really can't decide what to do, become a maths teacher. It's respectable, worthwhile, the maths at that level is easy, and you get long holidays.
