It's wrong, a teacher should teach students to question authority, and which ever statements any authority utters.

Why the hell would I want to teach them to question authority?

Then they'll stop doing what I tell them to do, a teachers main task is indoctrination.

If a teacher has any control over their class then they should be able to take a mistake in their stride, simply admit it and move on. But for those whose hold on control is weaker, mistakes can never be admitted.

Adam Hilliker is not a good teacher in my eyes. I don't like his pig-headed teaching style, and somehow suspect that he's working in some fundamentalist school.

That's because in the land HE comes from (the world behind the magic mirror), what he said is true.
Sadly, I can paralell what happened to the kid.
In fact the exact same problem had occured, but it wasn't the teacher who had originally said it. The math book had said there were 5280 feet in a kilometer. The teacher read it as part of a larger math problem (ha ha), and I instantly said "Wait a second...those are two completely different methods of measuring distance. It should say 'mile'."
I was reprimanded and sent to the principal's office for speaking out of turn (okay, they had me on that), and for questioning a math teacher's authority on numbers.
Later that year, I was punished for saying that a crow and a raven were not the same bird, which was in direct contradiction with my science teacher's edict. He ended up looking for what I said, trying to produce a clipping that would prove me wrong. It never happened.

Your ft vs. km story somehow reminds me of the sleazy Yugo car salesman in "The Simpsons" when he claimed his little Trabant knockoff would do (some # of) hectares per gallon.

i had an awesome fifth grade teacher. i used to challenge him weekly, but he was always really cool about it. if i could prove i was right, he would give me extra credit.

Too bad all my teachers seemed to have some sort of god complex.
My ninth grade honors biology teacher was the most accepting, and he gave extra credit to people who could prove him wrong as well.

By fear you mean? My second history teacher look like she where born in Greece, 500 years before Christ. Therefore we where afraid that she might get a heart attack and die during lesson. Was it that kind of fear you where referring to?

Chaos ruled OK in the classroom
as bravely the teacher walked in
    the nooligans ignored him
hid voice was lost in the din

"The theme for today is violence
    and homework will be set
I'm going to teach you a lesson
    one that you'll never forget"

He picked on a boy who was shouting
and throttled him then and there
then garrotted the girl behind him
    (the one with grotty hair)

Then sword in hand he hacked his way
    between the chattering rows
"First come, first severed" he declared
    "fingers, feet or toes"

He threw the sword at a latecomer
    it struck with deadly aim
    then pulling out a shotgun
    he continued with his game

The first blast cleared the backrow
(where those who skive hang out)
    they collapsed like rubber dinghies
    when the plug's pulled out

"Please may I leave the room sir?"
    a trembling vandal enquired
"Of course you may" said teacher
put the gun to his temple and fired

The Head popped a head round the doorway
to see why a din was being made
    nodded understandingly
    then tossed in a grenade

And when the ammo was well spent
    with blood on every chair
    Silence shuffled forward
with its hands up in the air

    The teacher surveyed the carnage
    the dying and the dead
    He waggled a finger severely
"Now let that be a lesson" he said

My first history teacher ruled by inspiration, and he was my favourite until we got a female history teacher that did the same, only better.

    Fear is for wusses.

What worries me is that when Vorak become a teacher I can see an army of small children with big guns trying to take over Australia.....

I base all of my teaching strategies on the school of DE.
