Is it just me, or do magic cards suck?

I think I'm the only person I know who was immediatly put off by the actual skill=amount of money spent on cards factor of this "game" (money spending contest), from the outset.

Not completely, you just need to find some common card tricks. The right rare card and the right bunch of commons will make a very nice 20 buck deck. Although, I do agree with you for the most part, because all wotc has to do is come up with a new rule and your 20 buck deck becomes useless.

The best deck I know is made almost entirely of commons. It has almost no uncommons or rares at all.

The important part is that you play with people who have spent about the same amount of money on cards as you, or you do things like drafts, that's when it is actually interesting.

Or you just play with friends, like I do, and having multiples of a given rare isn't particularly common.

And Sleek, while winning may be related to the amount you're willing to invest, buying four Wrath of Gods does not make you a better player. Some of my friends have really awesome cards, and yet they make terrible decisions.

i actually don't remember which artifact, now... i just liked it at the time. the best deck i ever had was a rat deck... all rats, all the time. i whomped with that sucker, and there wasn't anything above an uncommon in it. now i prefer a red artifact deck, though... there's something to be said for goblins with haste that cost one mana to put down...

Man, my friend's goblin deck can do some nasty shit. I'm playing a white weenie deck at the moment, all commons or uncommons, and I was kicking some serious ass with it. Either I was really, or I built a really good deck (or both), but I managed to beat this Black/Green concoction which was basically a new version of the Rock, featuring 4 Kokusho's, Molder Slug and Barter in Blood. 4 times in a row I won. One game, I managed to remove every single Kokusho from the game, even though I had to kill one of them twice.

I really like the new set. I also spend too much money on Magic, but it's not like I buy four Ravagers or the equivalent a week.

I once traded a kid a nice legend for 3 booster packs, unopened. I got two legendary dragons in there. I'm trying to find a way to get my dragons out faster so they can like... do things. As opposed to staying in my hand until the fifth turn, when either I'm dead, or the other person has given up on ever getting another mana.

If you want mana acceleration, play green. If you want to be an asshole, play any other colour. Personally, I hate playing against black/green decks, because I know that they're going to power up to an insane amount of mana and throw down some huge fat creature to pound my ass with.

Admittedly I then throw as many combat tricks in as I can (I got rid of two Kokusho's in as many turns by using Awe Strike and Electrostatic Bolt and blocking it with a Samurai of the Pale Curtain - the dragons died, I gained lots of life, and the dragon didn't do shit when it died. It was fucking great.) which can piss people off even more. I really hate playing control style decks though. I'd rather just watch creatures bash each other or trade burn spells with my opponent, not have them return everything to my hand, counter my spells and then slowly kill me with some wet sap.

Fish's sister made an extremely nasty black and white deck that i'm having difficulty repelling... damn zombie clerics... by the way, have you seen the new decks that are out? they changed the rules about legends, but more importantly they have a new ability where you play the casting cost of an instant or sorcery to add it to another spell, thus playing it without removing it from your hand... very nice.

yea, that's why the one most valuable card for a green all combat deck is fog. I once won a game, I attribute it to the fact that I let all the attackers creatures (i.e. all his creatures, 12 suped up one one soldiers, all effectively like 10/10 or so), attack, then I cast fog. Then I attacked with all my nice, fat green monsters. :)

Fog is only 10 cents, and it can basically clothesline the opponent for 1 green mana.

A great mana accelerator in a multi-color deck is fertile ground, lets you gain 1 of any color when you tap the enchanted land.

I love my black cleric deck. Dark Supplicant, a few cheap clerics with useful abilities, and BAM! Scion of Darkness on turn 2 (if you get a god draw) or a few turns later if necessary, smacking your opponent up. And stealing his creatures from his graveyard to add to your army.

I never could play for beans (my brain runs at 6.46 kbps) so I just bought a pack every now and then and kept the ones with good art. From time to time I get them out to look at them or try to find insparation for a drawing.

    Neither do Jehovah's Witnesses.

Also, Eternal Witness is a bitch of a card.
