I have noticed that most of the horror games/movies are all around 5 years old or older. Why is that? Is horror just not so horrifying anymore, or is everyone getting a big enough dose on the daily news?

These days, there are a bunch of nasty porn games/movies! Is that the "in" thing?

There is a new movie coming out while watching the previews before jackass... looks pretty scary actually.

Get mtv to get their hosts and some celebrities mindless teens like to say horror is cool and I'm sure it will be popular again.

If you want to be scared play these:

    System Shock 2
Aliens vs Predator as Marine being alone at home with headphones on.

And if you want to shit your pants out of fear play the really old Shadow of the Comet based on Lovercraft's novels.

As ofr new horror games I didn't really play anything scary. AvsP2 wasn't half as scary as part 1. You can wait for Doom3 I guess.

What a coincidence! I just got that game only a week or two ago! The second one, actually. It is kinda scary at night, but I have beat it... at least the first scenerio. But, it is still nearly five years old! And, when is the third one coming out, anyway? I want to see what happens next!

Dragoon: I'm not much for Doom... The graphics are too sucky for it to be scary. My friend says his brother is the only one who has ever beaten it in Nightmare mode! As for the other, I have never seen it. I don't consider AVP scary... kinda fun, though.
Actually, one of the scariest games I have ever played is Thief 2: The Metal Age (I'm sure gold and dark project is even scarier, because there are monsters, but I haven't been able to find a copy  ). It is so involving that it just makes you jump when something pops out in front (or behind) you suddenly.

I've got Thief, but I don't play it much. A) The dark creepiness scares the crap out of me, B) I'm really bad at the controls... gotta do the tutorial about ten more times.... and C) I don't really have time.

    Resident Titles

    Resident Evil
    Resident Evil Director's Cut
    Resident Evil 2
    Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
    Resident Evil Code Veronica
    Resident Evil Survivor
    Resident Evil Code Veronica X
    Resident Evil 0

This is what has come out so far, on multiple platforms.

Right now, there are remakes done on the game cube, but a whole new RE is being made.

And other games? The most scary game I ever played was Silent Hill.. And part three is in the making.

Yes, but if you look closely you will notice that I wrote Doom 3 or Doom3 to be more precise. It should be out in the first quarter of 2003.

Then you must've have never played Marine campaign during the night with headphones on. Add motion tracker going all crazy in a pitch black room, movement noise around you start shooting all around and suddenly a face hugger jumps on you.

Resident Evil scares me so bad, I refuse to play it. Even during daylight, and with someone in the room with me. It's that scary. Something about a rotten corpse slowly lugging itself towards me just scares the shit outta me. I don't do the scary games.....

I don't know that horror movies are on the outs. Some recent good ones are The Others, Ringu and it's American remake, The Ring. I think the trend right now is to move more to tense, thriller style horror rather than blood and gore. I agree with this. The Freddy and Jason "chase you down and hack you apart" stuff never scared me as bad as the genuinely creepy shit like Rosemary's Baby or The Shining. Or Ringu for that matter.

Regarding the Silent Hill games, are these being ported over to the PC? I remember reading something about Silent Hill 2 being ported over, but I'm not sure anymore. I'd like to check the series out, but there's no way I'm buying a console for it.

I get scared looking at the screensshots of doom3. I have played final doom (but only with no monsters or cheats) I doubt anyone has finished the last level on nitemare, I doubt anyone has got past the first room (which is full of those fat guys with machine guns). I get scared with pretty much any fps game except TFC where I just camp with a sniper rifle. On the whole I'm a wuss and I don't like horror movies because they're too scary.

    "i" before "e" except after "c"

Yup, I've got Thief 1 and 2. Thief 1 is pretty crappy with the monsters though nbrosz. It's the one down fall of the game, all the stupid monster levels made the game kinda lose it's charm in the later levels. It lost all is "sneakiness".

    Hmm..

I always found it hard to believe that someone actually enjoyes Resident evil (PC game).

I seriously think it sucked. Perhaps it`s just that I sucked at it though, but I personally think the controlls are awkvard and that the anoying "save only at the typewriter" thing is too much of a drag.

The only thing I found particularily god with RE was the rabid monsterrdogs in the intro sequence of the game. Those were cool! :)

But if you like games like Reslident Evil, you should perhaps check out uhm..Dino Crisis I think it`s called, and the new game The thing based on the cult-classic by the same title.

Alone in the Dark are also horror titles, and somewhat like Resident Evil. I enjoyed the second installment I think it was, but I hate the rest. Espescially the newest.

Nocturne! Same genre and gameplay as RE. Supposedly great game with a great storyline and such. Not quite my cup of tea tough..

The Gabriel Knight adventure games are horror based. I definately liked those.

An old sci-fi goody adventure: Dreamweb. It`s great IMO.

There are also a couple of old adventuregames based on H.R. Geigers artwork out there, but I cannot remember the title it seems.

Evil Dead is a horrorbased survival game.

    The Blair wich project.

Several good cinematic adventures are horror based; Black Dahlia and Phantasmagoria to mention two.

And there are lots more. So, no; Horror is not "out".

    :)

    Who am I?

How the heck am I supposed to answer that?

I`ve been around at TA for quite some time, but for various periods of time I seem to..uhm..leave.

I usually return since there are alot of "oldies" around here that don`t usually frequent my other Arcanum forum.

I have some Arcanum fanart sketches up in the fanart section of TA if it`s still there. If not: http://k-bju.home.online.no

    :)

Heck, I`m even in the ingame fan-cemetary! :D

Other than that I think you`ll have to figure out who I am by your self.. ;)

Perhaps the only thing which is more scary than the game itself is thinking it could be ported over.

You see, the lightning and visual effects in silent hill make it what it is. Why are they so good? Optimization, that's exactly what the PC lacks even though it's 5x better hardware wise. I shiver with fear thinking what it would look like on the pc. Ps2 games will be ported over as soon as the pc starts to catch up having 10x better hardware OR the game will be made with all platforms in mind from the start. (GTA3)

The typewriter was a feature forced by PS1 limitations, later they just figured it fit into the style. I personally think PC games are plain to easy when you can save virtually every second. But it's what pc gamers like and are used to.
The controls have been made with a PS pad in mind, not a keyboard or a pc pad. I played RE 3 Nemesis on PC using a logitech wingman and was confused by the controls for the most part of the game. Another thing is that ported PS1 RE games lost a whole lot of atmosphere due to crappy sound effects quality and a big contrast between graphics. It's silly when a 1600x1200x32 model is walking in 640x320x16 surroundings.

I played every Alone in the dark. Part one was a smasher, part two was excellent. Unfortunetly, it all went downhill from then on and the only thing the devs managed to come up was silly shit. And I agree, especially the new one, everyone praised it beyond. When I saw it I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry.

Yes, it's quite good, nice graphics and sounds. Not much of a storyline though.

WOW, are you joking? That game was made for the AMIGA!!! I agree that it ruled, however goodluck running it now.

Talking about oldies, one which is not THAT old is Harvester. Damn, that game was for psychos just like me. :D

I already saved up enough money to buy a gamecube, call me crazy but I will by it for the new RE.
