I was going through my old game collection, just for nostalgias sake and I came across Arcanum. Having not played a decent non-linear RPG for some time, I decided I would like to give it a go once again. I installed the game, fine no problems and installed the latest patch 1074. Started the game up, created my character. Got into the game, was annoyed by Virgil and then after he shut up I started to explore, to my annoyance as soon as I moved my mouse cursors to the end of the screen to move my character to a new area. The graphics went haywire and you couldn’t see anything, it became all pixilated and frozen, the game cannot be viewed and thus unplayable. The game its self does not crash and seems to work just fine and you can still move you character around but you can’t see anything. I have even downloaded and applied the unofficial Arcanum Patch v080413 (WIP), to no avail. Anyway ideas how to fix this? P.S I tried, changing the desktop to 800 by 600 16bit, also made the exe file compatible for windows 98 and 95 still didn’t help and even tried using different mods, still no luck. Here are my system specifications Windows XP Home Edition - Service Pack 2 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ Geforce 8800 Ultra 768mb (Latest drivers) 2048MB RAM
I have the same series of graphics card as you do (with updated drivers) and the game works fine with me. I'm also running service pack 2 with XP. The only difference is that you're rocking a 64 bit processor. Are you using the 64 optimized XP then? That could be your problem perhaps? I'm not sure what it would be though, I'm unfortunately not as down on tech-jitsu as I used to be in my younger days when I was building my own computers...
Found out how to fix it, basically after installing the unofficial Arcanum Patch v080413 (WIP), delete everything in the maps folder in the data folder and when you start up the game again, it creates all new uncorrupted maps. It all works now, killing innocent people again, so much fun!
