I'm thinking about going down to the store tomorrow, and picking up some old, but good, cheap games.

    On my list so far:

    1. Grim Fandango. I'll give it a go. A funny game is never out of the question for me.

    2. An old soccer game, like World Cup 98, or one of the Fifa games. I liked them, and have been feeling a little nostalgic lately.

    3. I was also entertaining the thought of Motocross Madness.

Any comments or suggestions from you guys? You have about 12 hours from when I post this thread.

I would definitely recommend Grim Fandango. It's hugely fun, and you'll probably be able to find in a bargain bin somewhere.

I don't care much for sports games, but all the FIFA games are OK, if you like soccer/football/whatever.

I heartily recommend Motocross Madness, especially if you can get it in a bundle with the Sidewinder Freestyle gamepad.

Yeah, that gamepad would probably cost more than all those games put together .

I wonder if I can convert my N64 gamepad into a computer one...I read a tutorial for how to do it with a PlayStation one..

If you have computer game money available right now, I'd be going for Heroes of Might and Magic. I've had it a few days and am really enjoying it.

Did you ever play the previous versions?

Sheriff, I'm looking for older games, nothing too expensive. I didn't play the previous versions of HoMM...I never really got into that sort of game...what sort of stuff do you do in those games anyway? Build up those miniature armies, and go round conquering castles, so that you can get resources to conquer more castles?

Edit - Are they kind of like Warlords 3, from Red Orb software?

Nope. When it was just released, it cost only 10% more than Motocross Madness did. If you bought the gamepad, I think you actually got the game for free!

Warlords was always the poor relation.

Heroes plays a little like a board game, a little like a strategy game, a little like an RPG (very little).
    • You move armies around a map, picking up resources and magic items, and fighting non-player armies
    • You conquer towns to gain access to more and different troops.
    • You build up towns to improve the troops and spells available to you.
    • You attack other player resources and towns to win.

If you haven't played previous ones, I can't say for sure that HoMM4 would be for you. If you're looking for older games, pick up Heroes 2 or 3. They are marvellous.

Other older games ... Majesty is a real laugh and novel for an RTS. It has a gold edition out, which should be worth picking up if it available in Oz (it's not over here).

I'm scared because I'm totally addicted to the HOMM series and they are being released just when I need to start studying for my finals, which is right about now.

Do not buy HoMM4, then. Get yourself some studying done. It's only a few months. Heroes will still be going VERY strong when you're done with your finals and have all that free time to play with.

    I cannot buy them now.
    1. They are released in Polish and I don't even dare to think about warezing the series.
    2. I will need to order the game.
    3. So far I'm resisting.

But I spent so much time playing every single map, with friends and my brother... That game is gold. I just totally love it.

Grand Theft Auto 2. mmmmm killing rednecks mmmmm

You might also want to try Pharoah if you like city simulators, RollerCoaster Tycoon (which is very, very addictive), and Master of Orion 2.

I don't know if any of those are old enough, though...

    Hmmmm..... Old games

    1. Grim Fandango. Buy it if cheap. I've played the demo... It was fun.

    2. An old soccer game. I'm not really into sports games, so I don't know.

    3. I was also entertaining the thought of Motocross Madness. Played the demo, liked it, thought of buying it, got new el-cheapo keyboard that can't handle more than 3 keys pressed at a time, didn't buy game. You should though, it cheap.

I'd also recommend Railroad Tycoon II Gold Edition. Great game for builing railroads. A bit boring after a while when you're playing your own free open-end games and you're soo OBVIOUSLY better than the computer AI opponents.. (Even though they somehow manage to get WAAAY more money than you can ever hope to get from just hauling junk around) But one of those games you can always pull out and play a bit.

Uhhhh.... let's see what else... Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (The 4th one I think?). Great fun ramming your pursuit Corvette into the side of a BMW and spinning it out to pull it over. If you don't have a good racing game already, I highly recommend it. If you're lucky, you can probably get it for $30 Australian and get a free game ($5 postage) Electronic Arts offer, like I got.

EDIT: Damn! Missed the 12 hour mark by half an hour...

I played Railroad Tycoon 2. I spent an entire day playing it, collected over 100 billion dollars, then encountered a bug that added a negative sign before the hundred billion place. A waste of time? No. A really annoying bug? Hell yeah.

Actually, I found the demo for that game to be more than sufficiently entartaining for me. It lasted me almost two weeks... and I didn't have to pay a dime.

In the end, I just picked up Grim Fandango for (Aus) $25, which was more expensive than I thought...DU, I missed out on that offer by about 2 months, otherwise, I would have sent for Fifa 2000. I might have to check Harvey Norman. They're about the only people who regularly carry old games these days.

I didn't get Motocross Madness - I couldn't see the point. I used to play it for 10 mins whenever I found a machine running it, and I think I took everything away from it in those 2 or 3 encounters.
