I know, already taking precautions. Going up to queensland monday for a wee, err a long long time. Shit as it may be I can atleast escape the wind for a while. Way things are I'll likely end up in launceston over the holidays anyway

Only ever played the demo of Dawn of War, it was sort of fun and it was interesting being able to customise everything. Remembering it was 40k based sort of killed it, though.

Dark Alliance was the best expansion for the first Dawn of War game for multiplayer. The original and winter assault had great stories though.

Dawn of War 2 is good, but laggy as hell on my computer and has a crap ton of DRM (having to log in to both steam and windows live just to play story mode).

Why did it being 40k kill it for you?

Personally I've played table top for about 5 years now. Have a very powerful Alaitoc Eldar army which can go up to 3000 points, and was one of the few 3rd edition Alaitoc comps that didn't abuse the disruption table. I also have a 1500 point Ravenwing Space Marines army which I can fill out to about 2200 points if I want to include my extra Dark Angels pieces.

Heh, I played in an all caster party once as well in 3.5. CN Bard (me), N Cleric of Knowledge and War, CN Gestalt Sorcerer/Wizard, and NE Warlock. We kind of went from being protagonists to antagonists by the time I hit level 7 and gained glibness (+30 to bluff *drools*)

Glibness is pure win. You know what's nasty, though? Any, ANY of the Geas spells. You can really fuck someone up with a Geas.

Combine the two and you're looking at ruling the fucking PLANET if you're clever.

Disguise self, Nystul's Magical Aura, Suggestion, and Glibness makes master con-artist. I bought the world before I could get the Geas spells.

Off topic, but I was watching The Day the Earth Stood Still and the secret phrase used to command the robot in that movie is Klaatu, Barada, Nikto.

If your not geeky enough to squeal at that I will clarify why I did.

It's the phrase that Ash was supposed to say to return to his own time and also say before grabbing the "Book of the Dead". Since I love both movies I thought that was awesome.

I hope you're referring to the original The Day the Earth Stood Still and not the remake(which had potential, but fell short), but yeah awesome.

Given this, Klaatu Barada Nikto was originally used in The Day... and not the Army of Darkness.
Just wanted to clarify for those of us either too young or clueless to know that the Keanu Reeves version was not the first.

The day the earth stood still? I hated that thing... Well, the remake anyway.

Curious Xiao, noticed on your live journal that you mentioned that the fire/water spirit was mist - should that be steam, or? It is your story, was just wondering on the connection

Reason 40k is a turn off for me is that the only people I could play it with (this was back in highschool) were morbidly obese, greasy, hairy giants that smelt like month-old sun dried tuna and were unsurprisingly disgusting and awfully filthy. Only played with them once or twice, however the ensued puking left me hating 40k more or less.

Some of it's okay, if a little overdone. In the end I had a couple hundred points of crappily-painted Iyanden. Broke as I was I carved most of the warlocks out of regular soldiers which looked rather hilarious, particularly in the microwave.

Iyanden were too slow for me but I did like the paint scheme.

    The Fire+Water spirit is Steam.

The Water+Fire spirit is Mist. (And this is the best that I could come up with after about four hours of head-desking effort.)

And yes, the properties of a spirit change depending upon which element is Primary and which is Secondary. e.g. Light+Shadow is Hidden (which grants a weak invisibility power), while Shadow+Light is Shade (which conjures a shadowy shield that deflects magic attacks).

Of course. I refused to watch the remake. Also never saw the remake of The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. I don't want to be that old man in the theaters yelling about how they ruined a classic. I have to much to rant about already.

I saw the remake of The Time Machine, THEN I saw the original. The original was still better in pretty much every possible way. (Although the visuals on the remake's Morlocs scares the pants off me - not literally.)

I refuse to watch a remake of War of the Worlds. Ditto Day the Earth Stood Still.

In conclusion - fuck you, Hollywood.

Fuck Hollywood. Now we're talking. Klaatu Barada Nikto has shown up in many things following its source. I think they're the names of three Star Wars species, just to mention another. Point is, it's a popular reference which every slightly geeked up film-goer should know, and there's even an original vs. remake argument to warrant crimes against the producers and their institutions. I've seen all three mentioned remakes, sadly, and none are on par with the originals.

In short; the first two words of this post.

(Hey Minuos, where's that quote in your sig come from? It amuses me greatly.)

I saw the remixed (original) Star Wars films about three years after seeing the non-remixed version, and I wept tears of bitter pain. It's for no small reason that Yahtzee calls him George 'Franchisicide' Lucas.

I vote we storm Skywalker Ranch, put a few bullets in him to put him out of our misery, and get the original films back. (I'm not even much of a Star Wars fan, being a Trekkie at heart, but still...)

The only three problems I have with the new versions are:

1- Han was supposed to shot first.
2- Anakin next to an old Obi-Wan and Yoda? hat happened to that fatherly old man?
3- Gungan Genocide didn't went through?!? I thought racist Empire could do at least one thing right.

Still, I don't see why people make such fuss over the extended version (and huge Star Wars fan here). Can you elaborate?

Don't come along 20 years later and throw some slapdash computer graphics into a film from the 70's.

Especially when the special effects they made in those days are still better than 90% of the shit Hollywood cranks out in this brave new world.

Blade Runner is the greatest example I can think of, and although the Doom film sucked, I think they opted for as little CG as possible. Always a redeeming factor in my eyes. I'm all for storming Skywalker Ranch merely to prove a point, and violently re-educate him in the concepts of selling out and general principles.

Oh, but the quote in my sig is shamelessly drawn from my book to be, Xiao.

I believe they explained it with saying that while the very appearance of Anakin's force ghost was because of his redemption and returning to the Light Side, he appeared in his young form because that is how he looked before he was tainted with the Dark Side. Can't say this convinces me, I would be more likely to believe that since he's a ghost he can take any form and decided to look younger because he want's to be sexy again.

One thing I cannot fault George Lucas for is being an absolute sorcerer with special effects. Either in the originals -or- the remakes -or- (sigh) prequels. (Yes, the original movies are better than the redone Special Editions. The SE are not bad except in comparison.)

Now, if he could only fucking write, we wouldn't have had Padme and Anakin within nine parsecs of each other.
