Research shows that extra money doesn't bring much extra happiness. So the answer is no - the extra happiness gained from the money will be minimal, but the misery gained from selling his soul will be significant.

Also, unless Mr. Japes is way above average in financial management abilities, the money won't hang around for long either. Which would make it a double whammy - not only would he spend a year or two unsatisfactorily, he'll also find that a short while after he returns, he has nothing to show for it.

Alternatively - if he IS way above average in financial management, then he doesn't need the extra money in the first place.

 

You're right, it is your youthful brain and its distortion of time. You haven't lived long enough to realize how long life is or how much you spend of it working. Two years is only 2 to 3% of a person's life. When you factor in the percentage of time you spend working just to make ends meet (40hr per work week over 168hr per week equals ~25%), 2% doesn't seem so bad... especially when you consider that most people hate their jobs regardless of what they doing. Therefore, the real consideration isn't time, it's happiness.

Unless the above averageness isn't in investing, but in merely not spending it. I could survive 10 to 15 years off of $150K while doing nothing for income; longer if I invested it. But that was back where I used to live... and I had no life. But if I had a life, I still won't be spending much more than $25k in a year... Like I said, I am use to being poor.
