For a lot of people it's actually a good way to get money. I wouldn't call them morons, maybe they arn't interested in anything else. I mean, you know how easy it is to get into the military? Hell, if I didn't have any plans, I'd result there...the marines have called me up...course they were telling me they could HELP me get into a nice college and stuff (which is actually true, they can help), but I declined thier offer...I'm not in the mood to hold a gun right now.

Those recruiters...they sure do like to talk like teenagers or something...very interesting actually. The one who talked to me just didn't want to let me go, he just talked and talked and talked...I told him I didn't want to join! Err...anyway, yeah, I wouldn't call people who join a moron...

Even when I was on the verge of flunking out of high school (due to a total lack of interest, I promise), whenever those recruiters would call me up I'd always tell them I had a full scholarship to UCLA or some other really good school. It was always pretty funny.

I used to want to be in the military, I was planning on it for long time, but I kind of grew more and more disenchanted by it. After 9/11 I think I really started thinking about why, and how the government has given people so many reason's to hate America, and decided I could no longer morally be a part of something that I already suspected of just being there to protect only Americans. I think I was sort of inspired to join by how we helped out in Kosovo, but back then I was just a stripling, I think I have a less skewed view of the world now.

The Marines are basically the amphibious infantry forces of the Navy. They are transported on Navy ships, and then land on shore via armored hovercrafts. They then exit and raise hell. They are not however, special forces, as some marines seem to think. The first time I heard that nonsense was at a Christmas reuinion party put on by the leaders of the North Jersey Homeschoolers Group in which us old alumni got back together and hung out. There was this one kid named Andy that I'd never really liked too much, he inexplicably had a huge ego even though nobody really liked him, and he was chunky and funny-looking. Anyway, so he was at this party, and he was wearing a Marine uniform, but some of the accessories made him look suspiciously like he was in a marching band. So I walk up and deign to talk to him, just for old time's sake, and the first thing out of his pompous mouth is, "You know, they don't use urban camo anymore." (I'm wearing urban camo pants.)
"Um...I know. I'm just wearing them because I like them. (attempting to remain civil) So you're in the Marines now?"
    "Yeah." (arrogantly)
(having trouble controlling my hands) "Yeah....Caleb (my brother) is in the Special Forces."
(arrogant snort) "All Marines are Special Forces."
    "Yeah."
I then walked away and haven't spoken to him since. Later I found that he was indeed in the Marine marching band. What a useless douche-bag.

I've got a few things to say about this:
Bold: first off, it's TH, MT, or SA, not TW. Second off, I realized that it was Chunkers whom I was thinking of, not Fish.
Italicized: When I said cannon fodder I meant first wave, imply that there is no difference. :)

Fish, I'm retard. Glad to meet you. I wasn't posting much when you were around, and didn't really know who you were. But now that I do, I have to tell you.. We're in love with the same woman.

nobodie, you sick, twisted, delusional son of a bitch...you are hilarious.

I'm actually considering joining the Australian Army at the moment, but I think that my personality is unsuited to it (i.e. my lack of leadership instincts) even though in pretty much every other way I'd do well. I just happen to fall down in one of the most essential areas. I've still got time to think on it though, which is good.

I'm thinking of joining the army reserve. Of course that may change when I'm over my adolescent obsession with killing stuff.

i wasn't aware leadership was necessary for the army... as far as i can tell, they have a few leaders, and everyone else does whatever the fuck they're told...

Or if you want to be an officer, like me. I'm too smart for general entry, otherwise I'd consider it.

Jar, you're just so cut for being a drill instructor. If anyone's fit for converting ordinary decent guys into sick motherfucking warmachines, you are.

Nowadays, I'm quite happy I wasn't conscripted. Whoever said cuts in the army budget was a bad thing? :D

Submarines terrify me... just the thought of being so deep underwater, not being able to come up for a long time, or see land or something, in this tiny enclosed space... it scares me so bad. The submarine casualties were enormous in WWII, and I've been inside the WWII sub down in the harbor. It was TINY. And it scared the shit outta me. They also had a plaque dedicated to those who died on the subs. It was a huge number, though I can't quite remember what it was.
