I love the smell of -38°C in the morning.

... and I hate the fact that I have a car in this climate.

Well in that case I pity you, it's only -1°C here and I'm far too cold! Plus I walk everywhere anyway so I don't have to rely on a car not starting.

Man that's absurdly cold. The deep freeze over there was just on the news here. This may explain the sudden drop in Muro's mood.

If it makes you feel any better, I just got back from the rainforest to my beachhouse and slept in t'il two pm when I was cooked awake by the summer sun.

    So we're all sufferring.

You can keep the sub-zero temperatures, I'm quite content with typical lows in the thirties - all winter long. :D

I guess I should be happy, word has it that one of the neighbouring villages had to contend with -43 degrees, and that's just evil.

... on the other hand, it is manly as all hell.

Is enduring cold weather considered manly?

I suppose it would correlate with hairs on chests.

Do not underestimate the fortitude required to endure the stinking humidity or the killing sunshine, though, especially with a hairy chest.

For all we know that could be long grass underneath them.

That warhound has got lumps of grass up its leg then. Same with the marauder in the lower left corner.

Perhaps they're wading through grass clippings?

I've always considered soldiers who fought wars in sub-freezing temperatures nearly year-round to be the manliest of history's warriors.

My >70% Norse blood might be adding bias.

Look, I agree that conquering a mountain of frozen cocaine in bogiron armor is dead-hard.

I am also mostly norse, and privately agree that we're the master race (shh).

It's just that, if you slog through a mangrove swamp in 35C with 100% humidity, with snakes, crocodiles, mosquitoes and leeches and god-knows-what invetertebrate parasites, mould, fungus, bacteria, viruses etc etc, then it becomes clear very quickly that living in the ice, or on the ocean, is actually a way of escaping the competition.

Enduring the cold is tough, but being slow-broiled in a cauldron of parasites is worse.

ps - nice sig, DE, or am I having an acid flashback? No, it's ur sig, there are definitely no bugs on my screen.

The one advantage cold has is that anywhere civilised you can escape from it. There's no chill known to man that a few extra layers of clothing and a hot drink couldn't chase away. Heat is more insidious like that.

Too true. There have been days when the only way to survive is to sit very, very still, not eat anything and periodically soak my head with cold water. And the repeated cry is "at least in the cold you can just rug up."

To say nothing of the killing sun.

So many phrases from England are upside down here. Eg, 'it was as if the sun came out from behind a cloud' means 'blinding'. When the clouds cover the sun, then things become much clearer and more pleasant.

'Fine weather' means 'unpleasantly bright and hot' and you need to stay indoors. As if importing english DNA and replacing homegrown DNA wasn't stupid enough, we have to use their obsolete phrases as well.

The temperature has been bobbing between 25F and 55F all winter in Boise, but not often staying below freezing. This is exceptionally mild for this time of year.

A week ago I was in Hawaii on mid-tour leave and it was sunny and warm. Today, I was flying in the mountains of Afghanistan and it was -28C and I had ice forming in my nostrils.

At least you're not a mouthbreather, doesn't quite work in those temperatures unless you have a desire to fuck up your lungs.
