What's wrong with the "x users are currently browsing the forums" thing?

 

i think he means, on their profile, have a text thingie saying if they're online or not... or maybe he means have that text thingie on the avatar part of the post... hmmm... maybe he should clarify...

 

No he means instead of x would be written for eg. Maniac,rosenshyne,Jarinor,Jinxed are browsing the forum. I'd like this function too.

well actually i meant all of those. Near thier Avatar and make the X thing thier name. It all sounds real nice. See my ideas are not that bad after all.

 

I gave calis the idea before, but it appears it would be some work, so he's not so hot for it. The thing would have to be displayed on the buttom, hence more work involved.

 

Yes. Also, it would require more info to be retrieved from the database for a thread to be displayed. That'd make the forum slow, put an extra bit of strain on the server, etc.

Basically, when I review these suggestions (because I do, in fact, read them) I consider three things:
1. How many people would use this feature, and how much of a difference would it make?
2. How much work is it to implement?
3. Will it make the forum load any slower or put extra strain on the server?

And it's especially no. 2. that's causing trouble lately.

 

Maybe if you just copied the "Currently Browsing" page to the Forum Directory?
I don't know if that's any less work, but it might be...

 

I do not know how all of this stuff works. I know very little on web site making stuff. And very little on programing. I have just started learning basic Pascal.

what if it were a holiday, and 50 people happened to be browsing? 50 names at the bottom? that'd be silly.

 

There's a hack out there that does just that, but really... why bother? The next version of phpBB is going to go gold soon enough (what is it in by now? Release Candidate 17?). The more the current board gets hacked up, the more thorny the upgrade will be.

And besides, anyone who's really interested in seeing who's online just has to click on the "currently browsing" link. You can do this on any one of the forums. If the index page displayed "Who's online", then you'd have to go back to the index page to see it anyway.

I never use it...i just see how fast someone replys to my replys and then i reply to em.
